I realize that there are many Dr. Gyi fans here, so obviously the man is a great fighter/teacher/leader. The question was specifically about the veracity of his military record, which are sometimes used to promote the man. Your challenges do not address that issue, and his combative abilities neither prove nor disprove the accusations. Personally, I don't care that much. I hope he disproves these accusations, but if he can't or won't, It's not that big an issue with me. I've not trained under Dr. Gyi, but this wouldn't keep me from doing so; I hope to attend at least one seminar with him one day. The kudos directed at him are reason enough for that no matter how this particular soap opera plays out. I suspect if this thread goes much further (indeed, it's on at least 2 other forums I frequent) that I'll become friendly with my delete key. But that doesn't mean there aren't veterans here to whom this information is of much greater interest, and they should be able to go to that site and read. And then make up their own minds. jester ------------------------------ From: Ingo Bojak Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2001 14:09:47 +1030 (CST) Subject: eskrima: No need to shout... If Dr. Gyi's _military_ credentials are beyond doubt, then why overreact like this? Just point out where the website goes wrong. > Either get on the floor with the gentleman, like so many others on this > board have, like "Crafty" & Tuhon, to train and make your own > determination, if you think you are up to it. > Shrug. Even the website agrees that he is a fine MAist... > Do you have an opinion or feel like sharing some undisclosed > information? > I don't have an opinion on this and I don't have undisclosed info. I've read several heroic military stories about this man here (posted by Crafty) and now I read that these stories cannot be true. So I'm curious. In case you are really interested and not just having a bad day: the link was posted on the KungFu list, with a negative comment, and since the positive comments I've heard about the man came from here, I posted it here... > Or do you just feel like spreading manure around to see what comes of > it? > I guess one can put it like that... > Thanks for your invalid/invaluable input. They are hard to train with compared to the rattan sticks most schools use. I like them because you can use them for resistance-type training. But they don't flow smoothly if you are used to light sticks. My instructor insisted on training with them often, to offset the natural overcondifdence you acquire when working with the very light rattan sticks. Puts things back into perspective. Bottom line: get a pair of as many kinds of sticks as you can. They all teach you something different and vital. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Just encountered a source which says that Bodhidharma had -blue- eyes. Makes me wonder if he was actually Dravidian, but dark-skinned, blue-eyed people do exist both in India and elsewhere ... met a tall "blue" woman (meaning ++very++ dark, black) in D.C. once who had blue eyes (natural). Stunning. Captivating ... my response to looking into her eyes was like a buck looking into headlights :-) Anyway, in addition to being described as a dark Dravid, Bodhidhartma has also been described as Aryan (blue-eyed?). Maybe both are true ;-) Also, there may be some continuity or traces of influence btwn Egyptian, Greek, Indian and Chinese fighting methods. When I first studied kung fu one of my instructors told me that Egypt was considered the root. Some practitioners of Greek Pankration also point to Egyptian roots, i.e., Egyptian murals document martial practices similar to Pankration. Nubian murals similar (wrestling, etc.). Maybe Vajra Mushti and Kalari Payyat of the South Indian Vijayan powers provided some of what we see in Kali, etc. Ever seen Indian Clubs at work? There are S. Indian ashrams which teach things like double flexible sword ... they look almost like ribbons. Before the Brit influence there were fights btwn monks of different orders who carried all kinds of staff-based weapons, including tridents. The staff was given to the renunciate upon taking his vows (nonviolence, chastity, etc.) ... along with a robe and a bowl ... hence the robe and bowl of kung fu succession? ("Grandmaster" pas! ses the robe and bowl of the school to his successor) Be well, Mik __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/ ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 08 Feb 2001 10:32:22 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #74 *************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY of an email (top line, left justified) addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
