True that Kamagong and Bahi are amongst the denser of woods, and are heavier than what you'd expect. If you are looking for a finished pair at 28" in length, the cost to you without S/H can be upwards of $50/pair. If you are looking to build a set for yourself, a finished board can cost you around $20 and yield about 6 pair of sticks. You should be able to find the wood at a specialty woodworking store as a finished board (ie: 1"x6", 1.25"x8"...all finished boards), and if you have access to the right tools, can construct a set (or six) for yourself and sell the rest. Depending on what type of rattan you are used to and what thickness you prefer, I have found staves that range from ultra light to rather "weighty" depending on thickness and breed. Personally for serrada I use a 1.25"x20" section of rattan as my training weapon which has a bit of heft to it. The unfortunate part is when I move to a lighter, thinner stick I tend to loose some control since I'm used to allowing the natural weight of the stick assist in the technique. If you're looking for true weight to work your forearms, try a couple of steel bars for warm-ups and then move to your regular sticks. Just my 2-cents. So what place does this, or every other off-topic discussion, have on this newsletter? I have taken to scanning the header to see if there is any valid FMA threads, and deleting it unread, if there is not. This, of course, is Ray's call, but I respectfully request this thread and similar one's be edited out. Let's get back to FMA, we could always make a general martial arts newsgroup, maybe one for martial arts gossip, or what ever. Nobody who has trained with him doubts Dr. Gyi's as a fighter and a teacher. His military background is a totally different thing and a matter of public record. If the allegations are true they are true. Personal loyalties and admiration for his other sterling qualities will not affect history. If they are false they are false. In no case will it affect the man's skills, and I am sure that those who took note of what has been presented will say "I'm glad that is over with." People get upset if I let a couple of posts through and they get upset if I stop them. Geez... Seems that this is FMA/MA related and we haven't had but a handful of posts on it anyway. Why not start a thread you think more appropriate instead of posting the above.?. Those who put their lives on the line or have paid the utimate price with their bloo should be honored and letting anybody fraudlenty say they are a member of that group lessens their sacrifice. We all know how the titles Ranger, SEAL, SOF Soldier, combat veteran etc. carry that "seen the elephant" clout in our circles. So we all know why that would be reason to lie about ones history. Ive seen the websites and did the math, Gyi's stories dont add up. The "let the mans actions actions speak for themselves" excuse is just that an excuse. A warrior shoud answer challenges, not avoid them. Military service comes with a TON of paperwork and records, it shouldnt be that difficult to prove. And then make up their own minds. jester Jester, Figures. If you don't care much, why bother responding. But since you have decided to defend this trash, allow me to comment because this is a terrible injustice against one of the greatest pioneers of martial arts in the US who began teaching here during 1959. Excuse me, but exactly who would you be to verify or disprove a soldiers military record? Regardless if you have or have NOT been on the floor with the man. If you don't like his teaching method, or question his teaching ability, please do us (workshop participants) a favor & stay far away. Then this German physics prof is going to spread this crap. He should learn to stick to the numbers. Same bs they pull on the neijia list, which Ingo also participates in, with more pieces & tidbits of garbage. Innuendo, conjecture, rumors, but they (neijia) never are able to back up what they have to say. One of the reasons I enjoy reading ED is because you are not going to get away with that here. Try pulling that on one of these Filipino masters to see what gets handed to you, probably in a quick brutally efficient manner. Dr. Gyi needs no promotion. Due to his recent retirement, it is beneficial to the martial arts community in general to be exposed to his teachings, which he has just begun to teach in public. Now he is going to be subjected to this after 41 years of teaching. FYI, I am NOT a member of the ABA.
