His military record is _related_ to his MA abilities, since "proven in war" is generally considered to be a seal of quality. So it's not completely off-topic IMHO. However, the neijia list and my job are clearly off-topic. In case you haven't grasped the fact, this website is not maintained by me and I've actually no particular interest in Dr. Gyi (or US military veterans in general...) aside of being curious after having heard hero stories about his war time here, on _this_ list. Listen, pal, in case you haven't figured it out from my post, I already respect the man for what he's achieved in MA circles if not military ones. So don't start blindly spewing vitriol at a relatively friendly ear. I commented on your post partly because of the manner in which your message was delivered, and partly because it's possibly an attempt at information suppression. Gyi has a host of followers for good reason, but "yes men" arguing "proof by vigorous assertion" don't help anything. After all, Koresh & Manson had fans, too, and just as vocal. Now, before you go off on me for comparing HIM to THEM, I'm not. Read that again. I'm just saying that your vehemence does nothing for either side. The bottom line is, whether or not it IS an injustice is under dispute, and nothing Dr. Gyi has done since then will change that - it wouldn't matter if he's saved the lives of 10,000 nuns and orphans. We might choose to ignore any alleged untruths because of his greater good (and as I said, I personally would should a Gyi seminar come to PA), but it wouldn't negate the untruths themselves. >One of the reasons I enjoy reading ED is because you are not going to get away >with that here. A pillar of our constitution, no doubt. Longer sword, bigger gun, cannon, ICBM, and on and on... In any case, the truth will come out, and the chips will fall as they will. Thanks for the info. > If you're looking for true weight to work your forearms, try a couple of > steel bars for warm-ups and then move to your regular sticks. I agree with the steel bars. Swinging around long water pipes really teaches you a lot about body mechanics. As long as you don't tear your tendons off your bones, this is probably good practice. Although I'm not an experienced Filipino martial artists, over the years, I've also noticed that it's easy to strain or damage tendons and ligaments with steel pipes, not to mention clipping your own elbows. Ouch! As for the extra resistence due to the extra heavy steel bars during warm up, I've always wondered about the cumulative effect of this type of practice. If you don't do it long enough to build muscle, the short term "strength" gain is really just a temporary increase in efficiency due to the relaxation of the antagonistic muscles. The effect only lasts a short while, so I wonder if there's any value other than a brief ego boost. But, I'll take that ego boost ! A similar feat is common in isometric leg stretching. For side to side splits, if you squeeze a basketball between your legs (hey, let's not go any further, ok? Chuckle) for ten seconds and follow that by 20-30 seconds of a sideways split, it's pretty easy to do a very wide split after a few iterations. However, the next day, the super stretch is gone. The only way to get it back is to do the contraction-stretch routine. So, it seems that using heavier sticks for a brief warmup tricks our physiology into a temporary performance boost. Hmmm. There has to be drawback. Otherwise, our body would always operate at that efficiency. I would guess that the drawback is that your joints are less protected against hyperextension because the point at which your own arms decelerate has been delayed. ------------------------------ From: Ramon Rubia Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 23:08:22 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Seminar GM "Ising" Atillo--Balintawak Eskrima/Arnis Seminar Schedule GM Atillo "Balintawak Eskrima/Arnis" in Southern California. I have trained with him on several occasions and found him to be an articulate instructor and a knowledgeable martial artist. His knowledge of striking, locking and weaponry is impressive and he is an invaluable resource to the martial arts community. As for the controversy surrounding his military credentials I find this to be extremely unsettling. Much of his credibility within LE and military circles is based on his military experience. I have been in contact with a number of his ex-students who have investigated his claims and they have found some serious inconsistencies. I can only say that his expertise in the martial arts is unquestionable but I am distressed that he has (supposedly) gone to great lengths to fabricate a distinguished military career. Michael A. The accusations being leveled at Dr. Gyi are pretty substantial and on the face of it well documented. I do not understand why Dr. Gyi and his supporters would not want to set the record straight. Most of the accusations should be fairly easy to refute. As another veteran pointed out anyone that has served in the military during the last fifty years knows that there is a ton of paperwork involved. As Dr. Gyi and his family have served in the Ghurka regiments there should be ample documented proof of this. Since he utilizes a VA hospital there is some type of record (DD214, etc.) of his US military service. Again I do not understand why Dr. Gyi would not want to clear this up.
