Sorry to waste space complaining about it. "If your not part of the solution...." so, MHO is that I feel cheated when I hear that the stories he tells are possibly lies. Also, I cannot dispute his martial arts prowess after spending time with him and hearing the recommendations of martial artists I respect. So, since I train with a person to gain martial arts knowledge, I can live with it. I just won't take history classes from him until I hear otherwise. On to FMA - are there any East Coast stick fighting tournaments. I know there used to be the Lion Heart in MD. If there isn't any, are there enough people interested in having one? A special thank you to all those experienced moms and dads on the list who offered advice and encouragement. I received a question if I have mastered the "Diaper Abcedario" yet? Well, not mastered, but at least I've learned to cover the "fire hose" when the diaper is off to counter any surprise moves! Proper equipment helps (a picture of which is now at: http://www.pekiti-tirsia.com/pti_news-W2001.htm Thanks again, Bill McGrath Visit the PTI web site at: http://www.pekiti-tirsia.com/index.html ------------------------------ From: MdlAgdLftr@aol.com Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2001 16:12:03 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Kamagong and bahi sticks Hi all, A contribution on this thread...I have used both bahi and kamagong in practice. I have a bahi stick that my teacher gave me for my birthday one year that I treasure, so it doesn't get a lot of play. I also have used such woods as oak, hickory, and cocobolo, and have found that for extended practice and heavy sparring, I still prefer rattan. I have broken cocobolo in practice, but have never broken rattan. Any hard wood will break, some will take considerably more stress than other woods, but all hardwood breaks cleanly, whereas rattan will only "unravel." The bottom line here is that in practice, I don't have to worry about a large piece of wood, or half of my stick, flying across the room and injuring someone if I use rattan, as would be the case with any hardwood. Hardwoods have their place...we frequently feed lock and block with a heavy hardwood stick to show the student what a hit with a hefty stick feels like (they probably won't be defending against rattan in the street, more likely a tire iron or axe handle). Bahi, although heavy and hard, still by its nature will chip and flake, whereas kamagong and cocobolo won't. However, kamagong and cocobolo will often not show any signs of stress (cracks, splits, etc.) before breaking, so it's hard to visually assess how the stick is holding up. Also, I have been knocked out by a hit from a rattan stick, so I know it will do the necessary damage if the need were to arise (I don't carry a stick for the street, though, and don't know any rational people that do...a pocket stick does just fine for a defense weapon). My point? Use as many types of sticks as you can run across to be familiar with the differences in density especially since, if you do find yourself in as fight, you will most likely be using whatever you happen to find lying around for a makeshift weapon. If you are already used to slinging around a hefty kamagong or cocobolo stick, you will be able to effectively use whatever you find on the ground. A side note...Jeff Finder makes some synthetic sticks that are damned near impossible to tear up. Well worth the investment. Kim Satterfield ------------------------------ From: AnimalMac@aol.com Date: Fri, 9 Feb 2001 17:04:31 EST Subject: eskrima: Animal in LA From Marc Animal MacYoung Hey folks a situation has come up where I will be traveling to LA on business. I'm going to be in the LA area (Westside/southbay) looking for a hotel site to host "the Coalition" seminar. While it will be this fall,I have to fly out now to set up the booking of a hotel/convention center. After trying it over the phone, we just gave up and decided I had to come out to LA. I will be out there Monday, Feb 26 and then some for finding a location. Thing about it is...hey, while I'm there why not get in some teaching? Now I know it's short notice, but I'm curious if anybody knows a school where we can hold either a one day or a two day seminar. I'll come in from Denver on the weekend before and we can have a grand ol' time tossing each other around or playing with knives or whatever people want. For those of you who haven't heard of the Coalition, Myself, Peyton Quinn, Sammy Franco and Richard Dimitri (from Canada) have all gotten together to form an organization for "Been there, Done that" self-defense training. The first seminar will be in Los Angeles in either this coming late September or early/late Oct. Depending on what I work out while there.
