I totally agree. What sets my BS detector off is when the stories of capture, escapes, expoits, black bag operations etc. etc. keep stacking up. As a LEO I find that the good liars are the ones that have one good story and stick to it. The bad ones are those who keep piling on the BS in an attempt to convince you. I became very ill once inhaling the powder-like shavings of cocobolo, and later found out that this is a common problem for woodworkers and cocobolo. Seems that a lot of people have become sick cutting, or especially sanding, this stuff. FWIW, my favorite wood to use for hardwood sticks is hickory. Remember the Clint Eastwood flick, "Pale Rider," when after whipping up a bunch of rednecks with an axe handle, Eastwood mused, "there's nothing like a nice piece of hickory?" He was right; an axe handle makes a very nice combat stick...already flattened out somewhat, hard as steel, and if it happens to break in practice, just pick up another one at the hardware store. Hickory is inexpensive, durable, and packs quite a hefty blow. I have two hickory sticks that have lasted through years of beatings, with little to no visible signs of wear. Kim Satterfield ------------------------------ From: rocpas@ameritech.net Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 19:53:49 -0500 Subject: eskrima: who to train with I have read some of the recent posts on Dr. Gyi, and have found myself with varying degrees of feelings. I can fully understand some of our combat vets being upset if his war stories are not true. However for the rest of us, and the Vets who would find these things very distasteful, you must make the decision for yourself weather or not he has something to offer you in your quest for MA knowledge. There are so many stories in the MA's about this master and that master. I choose a long time ago not to believe most of their stories, but rather take them with a grain of salt, if it will get me the knowledge I seek. Combat Vets a side ( because I believe they are entitled to feelings of a level that most of us aren't ) If we are to tear this man down why stop their. Grand Master Anciong Bacon of Balintawak killed 2 people in his life in the 1950's, and guess what he went to Jail for both of them. But yet no one questions the 90 year old Eskrimador who ( on tape ) claims to have killed oh so many people in the Philippines, yet never went to jail . Like I always say if so many great masters fought to the death, how come there is so many great masters. Oh and what about that cave of death thing??? One GM I know of who's so popular on this digest who claims he got everything from his Grandfather ( didn't they all ) well I have seen pictures of him in classes taught by guess who......... that's right Remy Presas back in Manilla. Oh by the way look up a back issue of official karate from 1975, this same guy tried to steal the name Modern arnis from Remy and the magazine ended up doing a big article apologizing to Remy. Yet this man still trains and is worshiped by many on this digest, shouldn't we question anyone that would train under these people. Hey what happen to that guy who claimed to be the Grand Master of Original Balintawak a few years ago on this very same digest, eventually he and I and GM Buot came to an agreement, that it was all just a misunderstanding. Well I here he is doing fine and teaching lots of seminars and is doing a fine job spreading the FMA's. And don't get me started on the greatest martial artist in motion picture history!!! Its like my father always said "Martial artist all to often live in a fantasy world" They are often so quick to put an instructor up on a pedestal, and often will just as quickly take them down, do to any flaw that may be exposed, just ask William Chung. Take a look at who you intend to train with, will you get what you are looking for from them if so, then go for it. Do not buy into to many stories of any kind. Remember PR in the MA's is no different than in the Hollywood business, some celebrities do certain outragous things just so their name is in constant print, because any print is better than no print. Well MA'ers often find that they can do the same, with stories or name dropping or even by looking or at least sounding more sophisticated then they really are instead of a simple explanation of block with you left and punch him in the nose with your right, they will choose an explanation worthy of Protagoras himself, thus giving the appearance of a scholar in the MA's. The point is if they have something to offer you and yet may not be up to par as far as character for your liking, its a judgment you must make, don't let others choose for you. If you truly despise them you may choose to stay away. The fact is martial arts and bull shit seem to go hand and hand. Unfortunately bull shit knows no bounds, half the people in MA's that I have met are full of BS, of course many ex military people I have met are too, and so are most people I meet, of course many of them may think the same of me. I do know this Mr. Rich in Arizona is a former combat SOG and 2 of my cousins are former combat marines in Vietnam, Mr. Rich rarely ever speaks about the vary vicious things he did. Both my cousins still have nightmares, especially my cousin Bill who had two confirmed kills with his bare hands. It seems that most of the combat vets are this way. Its the gun ho I join the service to protect my country and be a lean mean fighting machine ( when really many of them joined cause they had nothing else going for them )guys that have all the war stories. The sad part is that if a person uses an unjust military hero type of back ground on himself to make himself more in demand for teaching I believe this to be wrong. Of course if you train with somebody because they were in the service, so you think they are better at hand to hand combat then any one else then you are stupid and should just quit while your ahead. FOr some strange reason, and I am sure this will get me into trouble again, but people have this belief that if you are a cop or a soldier you understand hand to hand combat better than every one else, which is just plain BS. Their are great instructors, with LEO and military back grounds and their are shitty ones and the vice versa. If we were to judge everyone on moral character who would be left to train with??? They and or we all have flaws, granted some are greater. Hell I think its hilarious to listen to people talk about how wonderful this instructor or that one is and how they are so at one with them selves and so full of inner spirit and balance and harmony, then you find out he divorced his wife and is usually involved with another woman, and usually a younger one!!! What it proves is they are no different than the rest of use, they just may have a skill or knowledge to offer, and we have the choice to take it or leave it. I hope things work out for Dr Gyi, and I hope that he continues to teach and donate his time and money ( as I believe he does ) to our combat vets in particular, who everyone in America should honor and respect. Which by the way I always wondered, do any of the European countries have a holiday honoring American soldier, if not why??? It seems the English, French, Polish, Italians, Jewish, folks just about every one over their should, honor the American vet, along with their own Vets. Just a thought. ONe other thought how many of you military people voted for Clinton, and did any of you find it hard to serve knowing that your commander in chief, did things that most would consider far worst than anything Dr. Gyi is alleged to be guilty of. Its a complex world ain't it!!!
