Ray, I haven't done it before, but from what I gather in Defensor Method, live blade training is required for getting a Guro certification. In a demo one of our instructors was cut, deep enough to see the white of the bone. My seniors on this would have more info on that. If you have, was anyone cut (more than a lite scratch)? >> From Marc Animal MacYoung Aside from the obvious...uh...unexpected training sessions, I have survived...er... engaged in, I tend to work live blades with on-going private students. I am very selective as to who I hand a live blade to.I don't do it durning open seminars, because I cannot control safety. However, I know of no safer way to utterly convince someone that against a knife, the "I'm-going-to-just-stand-there-like-an-ox-because-I-am-a -ruf - -tuff-nif-fighter-who-is-going-to-refuse-to- move- and-take-damage- so- I- can-give-my-opponent-such-a-pinch" attitude they pick up bare handed or stick sparring is suicidal. I want the guy scared. In fact, I want him so scared of that knife coming at him that he is going to have love handles. Those are his ears because his a**hole is slammed so tight that they have been pulled down to his waist. That fear is what I am going to teach him to use to rip the knifer's head off in two moves. And I mean that, so what if I blow it and my killing move doesn't work, the attacker is now unconscious. I'm not persnickity, that will work too. If someone facing a blade doesn't have that fear, he ain't going to be the one eating supper tonight. ------------------------------ From: "Jesse [IHF] Greenawalt" Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 11:13:07 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Re: Live Blade training From: Ray Terry >How many of ya'll out there in ED-land have done live blade training? >If you have, was anyone cut (more than a lite scratch)? Yes, but only solo stuff on a cutting dummy, draw & cut, carenza, etc., never for 2 person work. Dulled blades or drones for prearranged drills, never for sparring. I was never cut badly. It's too dangerous to play with real blades in unpredictable situations, IMO. One guy on another forum (are you here, too, Dave?) severed a hand tendon during a passing drill, and he's no beginner. If I were in a situation where I was going to war with blades at any time, the increased sensitivity might be worth the risk. In my current situation, no way. jester ____________________ www.kicksandstix.com Gemberling's Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do & Arnis ------------------------------ From: "q" Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 09:13:14 -0800 Subject: eskrima: final on credential >they found out. I cast a skeptical eye on the philosophy of "overlook a >persons character if you can get something out of it." There are penty of >other instructors out there. > No it is all about "character". You make my point exactly. Character counts not credential. Each person has to evaluate the character for themselves. > >docfung, > You stated that "credential" means nothing. The fact is "credentials" >are what the world is based on. The world is fooled by credentials. Anyone who has done alot of school knows that. In America many rate success as financial success. Who are the richest people? Not the ones with PHD credentials. Not the MD's or the DDS's. Look at the Gracie family. Helio Gracie learns JJ from some Japanese guy refines and formulates a personal system, teaches his kids. There is little credential there. His kids kick ass all over the world and he does the peid piper in So Cal and everyone comes running to learn. In fact MA in america has been changed by B. Lee and Rickson Gracie more than by any others. Lets see SiGung Lee did not even finish the Wing Chun curiculim if I understand my history correctly and the rest of Lee Jun Fan he just made up as he went along. There is no credential there. But the man proved his worth. If credentials really were important and really ment something there would be no political policing bodies like the California Medical Board who police bad doctors. After all they all have degrees right? You see the news reports the isolated sensational stories of how some guy from Guatamala without a license is practicing medicine in his garage. But what each of you really need to worry about is the guy who has the proper credentials who sucks! Our courts are filled with malpractice cases that prove my point. While any doctor can end up in malpractice court character flaws get you there alot faster. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. I just wish we could have seen some of teh competition, and some fencing. I think there are pleanty of other arts out there that spar and would like to see an open art style competition. If there is room for horses there is room for martial arts. The IPMAF (Ernesto Presas) is working on an International stickfighting competition type event for the olympics, and I would also like to see it. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
