I have been living on guam for the last 15 yrs and haven't seen San Jitsu practiced here, although I can't say that it doesn't exist. But if it is, it is not taught out so people can train in it. We have a big grappling/submission community and a lot of various other arts here. But as far as main martial arts practitioners and competitions, we have at least one MMA and TKD tourney a year here. For non- MMA or TKD players, it leaves a lot to be desired for the exchange of different arts here as everyone is mostly tied up in their own little world and is always stating that "My art is better than yours".. I for one refuse to play that game and there fore I stay with my little group of people and work with different kenpo groups on the island. I am one of 3 FMA instructors on the island, even with a big filipino community, there is a small following of the indigineous arts of the Philippines. It's true that I haven't seen anybody carry a bolo into SM or Gaisano- the guards at the door wouldn't allow it; however, anywhere outside the city, bolos ARE carried and worn by many people, almost all the time. On the small island where I have my home, most men are either farmers or fishermen, and every, repeat every one carries some kind of large blade in a wooden scabbard on his hip. Kids 5 years old or so play with blades longer than their arms as an everyday occurence. This includes women, too. If your only experience is in the city, then you should get out into the countryside to see the real Philippines. In the city your biggest fear should be the rich guys who don't fear the system. They or their bodyguards are the ones to watch out for. Steve - -- _______________________________________________ FREE Internet Email for the Martial Arts! Same as a heart punch? ------------------------------ From: "Kimberley Hobbs" Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 09:18:11 -0330 Subject: eskrima: Re: knife try One of the first things my instructor taught me about knife defense was blade awareness. You don't have a lot of time to asses the situation so it is important to gather as much information about the weapon being used as you can in the shortest time possible...is it a single edged weapon or double edged, does it have a hilt, etc. This can make a difference in your attempt to disarm. My instructor always taught us to deflect the knife hand palm up to avoid exposing out wrists to the blade ( I know this is pretty obvious, but to a beginner with no experience this is really important to stress), and to disarm with the back of our hand whenever possible.
