The Thrilla in Manila. I never tire of watching those two great boxers test each other. I noticed that the bout was actually held in Quezon, not Manila. So I guess it was really the Thrilla in Quezon... Is Quezon a suburb of Manila? Ray Terry, Quezon City is part of Metro Manila. Quezon is another Province in Luzon, boundary of Batanggas, Laguna, and Rizal, and Camirenes Sur. Just a oiece of info. So I guess >it was really the Thrilla in Quezon... Is Quezon a suburb of Manila? > >Ray Terry > Quezon is a province, from 0 km it is about a 3 hour or so drive to get to it's Batangas border. The fight was held at the Araneta Colesium in Quezon City, which is (or was) the capital city of the Philippines. It is on the north side of Metro Manila. A foreigner who is aware of the System! On the bright side, if you're in the City and go to some of the upscale places, all you have to do is leave the "God bless (insert the country)" attitude at the door and chances are you'll be OK. Being loud and overly confident when in an unfamiliar social environment is considered to be very rude. Doing so being white is looking for it. (I'm a Filipino of European ancestry, I know about this.) Unless you've established a rep. or are with a known group. Manila is a large city, but it certain ways it is VERY small. This is simple common sense, but you wouldn't believe the number of people who get into trouble by ignoring simple courtesies. >Filipinos do not carry bolo knives in supermarkets. > You'd be surprised at what Pinoys carry, and where we bring them. Creativity is the key. Nuff said. > >Also, spent much time in the denizens of >Angeles where I developed a strong appreciation for the San Miguel beer >and other diversions. > Foreigners seem to develop a taste for the bite of our beer, & other things too! ------------------------------ From: Brian "\"BUZZ\"" Smith Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 21:26:54 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Instructors In Michigan W & NW In Holland Michigan there is a very good instructor Rick "Bong" Jornales he was very competitive in the Michigan Karate Circuit years ago and is heavy into realistic stick fighting. And myself, I teach in Northwest Michigan at Northwestern Michigan College. I have been in the arts since 1968 and have trained with many Filipino instructors. I too have been competitive in the Michigan and Can Am Karate Circuits for many years- being top rated for quite a few of those years ------------------------------ From: "Anderson" Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 13:33:35 +1000 Subject: eskrima: re: San Jitsu and GM Sanchez In regards to my statement concerning san jitsu and it's practice on guam, I wish to restate a part of my original msg. I said that I have lived on guam for 15 yrs and have not seen san jitsu practiced here on island. At no point did I say that san jitsu did not exist or that it wasn't practiced elsewhere.. I was stating that San Jitsu is not practiced on guam that I know of. I have read most of the articles of GM Sanchez and San jitsu, and have the utmost respect for a fellow martial artist who took the time and effort to develop his own system and make it known worldwide. I am not looking to start a flame show with the people of the digest, as that was not my intent when I posted what I have found living on guam and the martial arts practiced here. We just finished one brush fire with another topic which will not be brought up again and next time I respond to a posting, I will think hard and serious about doing so. In my case, our apartment building is next door to a golf course, an assisted living community, and a police substation. Crime is fairly low in that area so that would probably help out if the cops decided to check us out. We were jogging around the old folks home and no one got upset with us, so hopefully we would not be bothered. Now if I was running with scissors that might be another story... It was down to my waist for some of that time at other times at mid back . Yes I am a guy. My instructor told me to defend it or lose it. I finally cut it for a job as a medic . I found that when it reached a certain length I could use it to my advantage,as a whip to the eyes. Yes it did get me put to the ground more than a few times but after a while I learned to keep it out of reach.
