He is a good martial artist and a real nice guy. I have to recommend the drive to Detroit to visit our own Rock though! Mr Pasiwk has never failed to impress in the handful of times I have trained with him. H'mm, why defend something that has no intrinsic value, i.e., no role in keeping us functioning? Concern and "resources" spent in defending hair in a fight seem to be wasted resources, wasted concern eh? It's an added demand and a potentially serious liability, a liability easily remedied by not having it there to "defend" in the first place so we can spend our resources in ways that might really count. > I could use it to my advantage, as a whip to the eyes. With real effect? Really? > Its like learning with any other type of handicap > you learn to work with and around the problem ... but with other real "handicaps" we may have no choice ... with long hair we purposefully subject ourselves to unnecessary, self-imposed, and potentially ++costly handicap(s), right? Before I cut my hair (30 years ago!!!) I let a girlfriend know of my intention to do so. She said: "No, don't cut your hair!!! If you cut your hair I don't want to see you!" My response: "Since you 'love' the hair so much I'll send it to you." That was a "bad hair day" but we got over it :-) It is just too easy to control someone's posture with a hair handle. He is a world class martial artist. Also my student Hal Edwards is quite often in the Muskigon area, he is an awesome grappler, and a pretty good Cuentada and Balintawak man. Hope this helps Rocky Pasiwk ------------------------------ From: Chad Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 12:47:11 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: I'm back...jogging with short hair Hi everyone, after 1 long month with no internet at home, I'm back. There is so many digest, I'm not sure if I will get to go through all of them, so I'm just starting out for now with the recent tones. >>Who out there considers long hair a significant tactical >>disadvantage in a fight? Have you altered your own personal >>appearance as a result? I cut my hair short enough so that it won't be pulled for that reason. >>jogging with sticks Not sure fthe legality of it, but its something I've been doing lately with short burst of sprints and combos here and there on short jogs around the park. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My courses are only about non-denominational "essence of combat." If I make you leery, please trust your instincts and just simply move on to the next guy. I do really hate for you to worry yourself on me or any instructors with the same care and concern one might, say, investigate and select a brain surgeon. If you are looking for Filipino Martial arts? It's not me. Move on to a better guy. What I do only resembles Filipino material from time to time. I do not teach Filipino martial arts. I just have some FMA credentials on my resume. If you really like some great Filipino stuff, there's Bill McGrath of New York and and Ron Balicki in California, Chuck Gauss of Detroit, just to name a few. Kevin Seaman of New York comes highly recommended. Marc Hallack is just north of Chicago in Illinois, close to you in Michigan. I have little contact with the Filipino MA community, therefore few know of me anyway and I would surprised if but a few answer your requests on this forum. I had long hair for awhile, until I thought I'd just "adjust" myself for a new look. Got tired of it being a detriment to my safety - one it's easy to grab, two, if you look a certain way w/ the hair you invite people you don't like, and three, it's a hassle w/ authoritarian figures who think they got all the power in the world. On the upside - I got the best service when I enter a store! Everybody just thinks I'm going to steal something, which was good. Besides good service, I get to treat them w/ dignity and respect, and hopefully, the next long haired guy would be thought of in a different light. On another note - Even my Maestro Snookie Sanchez, who had long hair past his waist tucked it in when he got into fights. He loved grabbing hair when disarming a guy. When he'd come to class w/ his hair tucked in, I'd wonder what he was up to. All the guys I know around Waipahu who saw em fight, most oftenly said he tucked in his hair. I know he dealt w/ a jujitsu/judo guy once and beat em, but I don't know what he did w/ his hair. I'm not saying that it's bad, because even I had it at one point, but that it is something that can be a hindrance. But I knew of quite a few eskrimadors and old fighters who kept it. Hey, even some samurai had some long hair.
