Concern and "resources" spent in defending hair in a fight seem to be wasted resources, wasted concern eh? It's an added demand and a potentially serious liability, a liability easily remedied by not having it there to "defend" in the first place so we can spend our resources in ways that might really count. er...respectfully, there are a lot of things we defend which have no "intrinsic value, i.e. no role in keeping us functioning" . I do understand what you mean, but perhaps this could be re-phrased? For that matter, high heel shoes are dumb 'cause you can't run in them...but again, it's one of those things that people choose...although I s'pose you can ditch them...but what if the ground is covered in broken glass...? I also wonder if the issue is a little bit different for guys vs girls...I'm not so atttached (sorry ;) to my hair that cutting it off would bother me...mostly it just took me so long to grow it that I can't be bothered - if I cut it, that's it for the rest of my life :) but i do know girls who would freak out if they had all their hair cut off...oh well...:) > ... but with other real "handicaps" we may have no choice ... with long hair we purposefully subject ourselves to unnecessary, self-imposed, and potentially ++costly handicap(s), right? Well, unnecessary is relative, I think...If you work at a high risk occupation, where you may be in regular danger of somebody *wanting* to have a "handle" on you, then yes, it makes sense to have a buzz cut or something. But if I, as a female, were working in a business office and had a flattop (been there, done that ;), I would get at minimum a lot of weird looks for my unfeminine (yes, even today) haircut. Short bob or whatever they're called may be suitable, but it's still grabbable. So I think perhaps the awareness of the risk, and the probability of it being a handicap need to be assessed. From the time I was about 16 'til I was 29, I had a short back & sides...okay, it was a spike/buzz cut (i was a little punkrocker ;) In the past 4 years it's grown to 1/2way down my back (and it's blue purple & green :D - I braid it when training, and i usually have it up out of the way the rest of the time. I know someone could grab it; my Sifu says it's common for guys to grab girls by the hair when attacking them. However, I have luckily never been grabbed or attacked, and given where I live and my lifestyle, it is less likely than for, say, a security officer or someone living in a big dangerous city. so for now, I keep the long hair. I have plans to go treeplanting in the spring, in which case I'll probably cut it; likewise if I go walkabout and travel the world a bit - for convenience as well as safety. I really think it's a personal choice - for people not involved in MA, or even SD, it may never occur to them; for those of us more concerned with these issues, it might be the most sensible thing to do to cut it off...but I think it's a minor thing. Just personal opinion, of course. > Before I cut my hair (30 years ago!!!) I let a girlfriend know of my intention to do so. She said: "No, don't cut your hair!!! If you cut your hair I don't want to see you!" well now that's just (no offense) a dumb thing to say. My boyfriend looooves my long hair, but if i cut it, i cut it...I mean, I like his beard, but he shaves it off now and then...or does those weird beard-game things guys do (what's up with that?!?) - now it's a goatee - now it's an "Amish" beard - now it's just really long sideburns - now it's a mustache with fuzz on the chin... :D cheers, jocelyne ------------------------------ From: SolAndes@aol.com Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 16:53:48 EST Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #108 In a message dated 2/24/01 12:37:42 PM Pacific Standard Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << What do you guys think about biting during sparring sessions? Sometimes we'll use the "Lewinsky technique" where you bite with your lips wrapped over the teeth and this will prevent accidental bloodshed while letting your partner know if he's got bit. If you really trust your partner and go slow with control, you can use the bite like a submission. Practice will tell you how far you can go till the skin breaks. When you get going, the adrenaline will kick in and you will not be able to regulate how hard you bite very well. And human bites that break the skin are very nasty wounds. I've seen a few of them. The infection risks are terrible. Plus, no matter how hardcore my training might become, I always want to wear a mouthpiece in sparring. I like my teeth unbroken. I've been to them in several places, but can't say that I care for the sport. I don't know what to look for in a good chicken, therefore betting is just a pure guess, with the likely result that I lose my money! ;-()> Response: Agreed with your point. However, I admit that I found it fascinating that you do not need an alarm clock in Cebu. You wake up to the sound of roosters early in the morning. They start calling to each other and a cresendo of sound emerges. This is part of the ambiance that is unexplainable to someone who has not been there. As you walk down the road you see roosters tethered to a string holding their leg to a post. They are being bred for the weekend cockfights. But what I found equally fascinating was the demeanor of the dogs walking around the neighborhoods. They are almost human. They stay on the side of the road, avoiding the Jeepneys. They travel in packs and are so mellow. They blend in with the crowd and are part of the scenery. At one fine resort, as I was eating breakfast, two dogs ambled by and looked around then wandered off. I video taped those dogs since I knew I could never capture that scene in the U.S. With all of these dogs I never experienced one aggressive dog. No curb laws in the PI ? By the way I was told that the incidence of dog eating is on the decline in the PI. Used to be part of the food chain ? McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sorry for the late reply, still going through the digest I missed from my little vacation. Got a junglee stuck into the bone of my pointer finger doing a disarm out of hubud...that was an experience. Once after coming home from drinking, a friend and I thought it a good idea if I were to try and disarm a short barong from him while I was empty handed. Not a good idea if anyone ever is faced with the same predicament...deep slice on my thumb, nothing serious though. Stabbed in the forearm once by a cold steel 4" tanto voyager. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
