That last one is me. LMAO. I usually don't like to shave the nights we practice, so I can rub some sandpaper in the tender boys arms. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am thinking about adding this in on a regular basis along with hair pulling-not to the point or for the reason of pulling hair out, but for the use of minute discomfort or control (helps on the rear naked choke). Will try the "Lewinsky" technique, although I'll think of a new name for that, I don't want to be practicing soemthing that Monica was doing. Greg, I was thinking about just adding bites to clothed areas, again more so for discomfort and on awareness of dealing with it, not necessarily to chomp each other up. Anyway, I don't really want to put my mouth on all of the sweaty guys that I roll with. I shower before I work out, but I don't know how many of the guys do. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks Don. Has anyone else got a chance to see this book as well? Crafty, what was your take on it? Anyone can e-mail me personally also if they don't want to say anything bad publicly. What would one consider to be the basics? The advanced? The difference between the two, the reasons they are taught differently, etc. " Single Stick Basics: Gross motion power techniques like diagonal & horizontal strikes. 4 Wall and umbrella blocks. Corto striking techniques. Advanced: Tighter strikes like verticals. Witiks. Fakes. Takedowns. Disarms. Largo techniques. Double Stick Basics: 12 attack patterns (various 6 and 8 count patterns most on the list are familiar with). Advanced: Asymmetrical multicount counters to basic patterns. Takedowns. Disarms. Single Knife Basics. The knife vs. knife version of the empty hand knife tapping drill. Advanced: Largo attacks. Empty Hand Basics: Close quarters striking. Advanced: Slipping attacks. Throws & locks. There is often an inverse relationship between the power of a strike and its "sneakiness". The more powerful the strike the less "sneaky" and visa-versa. A lot of the sneaky hits are saved till one can generate adequate force in a small space to still get the job done. In general I would say that Pekiti is weighted towards teaching close quarters and gross motion power moves in basics and more timing dependant largo material, anything involving fine motor skills and anything involving grappling as advanced material. SEMINAR DATE CHANGE: The host for my Myrtle Beach S.C. seminar and I have had to change the date for the seminar after a large convention scheduled that same weekend and took up all the hotel space. The new date will be April 28th 29th. The seminar curriculum will still be Pekiti Disarma which is the single stick disarming series of Pekiti-Tirsia. (Event number 10 or 11 I think) RITC is held at the Soboba Indian Reservation just outside of Hemet CA (southeast of Riverside) and it has become a source of fighters for the Pride event in Japan with which RITC has some sort of business relationship. I like walking around and sizing up the fights and seeing who is up to what. Many of the top names in NHB are there. The event is held outdoors with a mini-tent over the lights over the Cage, and a tent over the TV announcers and such. We the masses have a view of the stars , , , except on this night it was raining. Despite this the night was a sell out and the stands were completely full. With the wind (air temperature lo 40s!) the mini-tent was not any where near to being able to keep the cage itself dry even with workers coming in with squeegees and towels between fights to try to dry the surface. It was very interesting to observe the effects of the conditions upon the fighters and the fights. Despite the temperature, fighters came in as usual in tight shorts and the great majority were barefoot (I don't know whether the rules allowing kicking with wrestling shoes.) But with the surface being so slippery only a handful of kicks were thrown all night without the kicker slipping and winding up on his ass. It was so slippery that many punches caused the puncher to slip and fall as well. And many a fighter who went to shoot would slip and fall upon his face. The net result was the most fighters were taken utterly out of their game. Unwilling to punch, kick, or shoot for lack of traction, and probably quite chilled by the 40 something degree wind on their wet bodies, many fights began with the fighters sharing a shrug of "What the f***?" with each other as they warily moved, each hoping the other would make the first move. This would continue until the crowd whistled and they would sort of grope their way closer until arms could make contact and they could establish grappling range. I think that a fighter with some good ground/low silat legs might have presented some very interesting questions. ;-) That said, my impression is that the level of NHB continues to increase. As the rules become more established, (e.g. a kick to the head of a fighter on the ground was immediately penalized without a warning) and events such as RITC become more stable, and the relations between events such as the RITC as a minor league team to the major league Pride event become more established, and the paychecks improve (I hear the new owners of the UFC have double the purse for their fighters) the environment for fighters to work on their craft improves. The synthesis of striking and grappling with many of the fighters is now at a very high level. The gameness is impressive too. Many fighters can take some seriously strong shots and not whither physically or psychologically which was not always the case in the earlier days. Also different from the earlier days is that one see A LOT less loutish behavior. Perhaps this is as a result of the suits sending down the word that loutish fighters are bad for the marketing plans, or perhaps as the sport evolves and matures so too the emotional maturity of the fighters. Guy Metzger got Nailed with possibly the best kick of the night and he just looked at the guy and smiled "Nice shot." Another fighter who got drilled with a cross just smiled and gave a "thumbs up"gesture with his hand. On the way home ( a two hour drive for me) the rains returned. The roads pleasantly empty of traffic due to the hour and conditions and conditions were ideal to replay the evening in my head and plot. :-) Woof, Crafty Dog ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 10:47:02 -0000 Subject: eskrima: FMA in yorkshire shock debate Bill Lowery: Sorry to contradict both Richard Killick and Pat Davies (both sound guys) but Richy is in County Durham/Bishop Auckland, which if anywhere would be classed as North Yorkhire. The questioner asked for South Yorkshire. Pat O'Malley is in Ossett which I believe is closer to the area requested. Thank you Bill Corrected on the geography count! The request asked however for people that I could recommend. Richy is hosting marc McFann on Thursday before he moves to Hull on Friday. This is after I host Sifu McFann on Tuesday in Snowbound Aberdeen. pat ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 7:39:25 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #110 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
