I know of several schools here: Vee-Arnis, Alfredo Acosta (Kuntaw Kali Kruzada), Anderson Martial Arts, Frank Ortega, Pekiti Tirsia and Modern Arnis in the Village. Yes, thatıs a lot of schools in one area. Unfortunately Iım new to the area and would like to hear any recommendations of these schools or hear from any of the students what the classes are like. Thanks. ------------------------------ From: "Jon Howard" Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 09:25:12 -0000 Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #113 >When I was a kid my mother used to tell me to zip or button my coat/jacket or take it off. Back up onto the shoulders provides a readily grab! Just a side note, has anyone ever seen the film "The Untouchables", this exact same thing happens during a fight between Sean Connery and an "old friend" of his. After the initial verbal plesentries, Connery has his open jacket pulled down from his shoulders so that both of his arms are momentarily trapped by his side as he recieves a couple of good shots to the jaw - a nice "surprise" opener IMHO. Good stuff. Compliments to Mr. Denny and the Dog Brothers. But, I am new to this stuff. I was just listening to Snoop Doggy Dog and Warren G, re: G-Dog, along with Nasty Dog and the other "Dog Pound" Crew. Additionally, I just wrote my comments about Cebu and dogs in the PI. Seems to be a theme going on here and I am trying to get a reading on the similarities of canines, and martial arts. But, my big question is, are the Dog Brothers related in anyway to Snoop Doggy Dog and the Dog Pound Crew. No disrespect, but with all this Dog identification perhaps a patent on the names should be in order. After all, you guys may get into a "dogfight" over copy right infringments. Also is there any correlation to the formation of the Dog Brothers and the parallel formation of the Dog Pound Crew with Snoop Dog, Nasty Dog, and Big Dog, The DogFather, and such. I recall that Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dog coalesced during the same late eighties and early nineties. I think Snoop Dog was originally on the Death Row label but is now running with the pack formed by Dr. Dre and Eminem ? Also, note that the Dog Brothers and Snoop Dog and the Dog Pound are both West Coast groups. There was this one Snoop Doggy Dog line in one of his CD's, something about burying a dog bone in one of his...anyway you can see my mind is truly on this "Dog" stuff. Has anyone formed a "Feline" group, say out of the East Coast ? Thanks, McD... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Can we get a ban on the use of cell phones by drivers? I've written off one of my favorite places (Skyline Drive, Virginia Appalachians) because a guy wrapped up in his phone conversation veered into oncoming traffic (me&wife) wa-a-a-ay up there on an edge if you know what I mean. Kind of a drag 'cause my dad worked with the CCC to build the Skyline ... boxed in the CCC camps. Stick stuff: I've been using a 40" piece of Lexan to refine some of my stick basics (all I do is basic!) and find that the two-hand grip going through diagonal and horizontal strikes is improving my regular single stick work. Recently read that Largo Mano systems use a 40" stick (Kampilan) ... which is also the length of some Katanas. Anyone trained Japanese or Korean sword ... comparisons with Largo Mano/Kampilan? This 'katana' is cool. Wrapped one end in silicone tape with buildups to aid grip. This grew out of using a 54" length to work warmups and single stick basics. Worked single stick broken attack basics with a close two-hand hold in the middle. This also improved single stick basics, i.e., goes a long way in improving form and flow of broken strikes, especially PT #3 and #4. What Tuhon McGrath says about how much the body participates in moving the stick becomes very clear ... also the left hand tracks more correctly. The resulting increase in awareness of p! roper movement carries over into regular single stick body mechanics. Re: absence of hair and susceptibility to injury ... haven't thought about that ... maybe oughtta go primal and cosmetic with a mudcap helmet like some of our ancestors used ... but theirs was a hair/mud combination :-) The only downside that I've noticed is the cold head phenomenon. We lose a lot of heat from the top of the head. Even when the rest of me is OK with the temperature, the top of my head can be uncomfortably cool ... so, skullcaps, berets and other hats are on. Be well, Mik __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/ ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 10:38:00 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #114 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
