Elrick, I had to laugh when I read your post. I too recieved my knife and axe card in the Scouts (toutenship card I think they called it) and had a grandfather who wouldn't open up about his war experiences in the PI until he meet my wife (a lovely Pilipina). I just yesterday decided that I would have to forge a bolo for camping (being an avid Pisherman (http://members.aol.com/jivita/PishPage.html) because I haven't found any I thought were right. I'd be interested in knowing what type you carry and how you use it. (We can do this off-line of course.) Regards. If anyone is curious about more details about the Dayak tribe, there's a great book called "My Life With The Headhunters" By Wyn Sargent. It was written by an American journalist who lived with the Dayak tribes for a while in the early '70s. It was, in fact, largely due to her efforts that a lot of the Dayaks today are "modernized." It's a good read and very interesting. One of my fondest childhood memories was going camping (in either neighboring Bulacan or Pampanga), and going to Boy Scout "jamborees," either a national or international gathering of Boy Scouts. It was at these camping trips that I got my first exposure to live blades. When we went camping, we were allowed to wear a fixed blade of our choice with our uniform, together with other camping equipment--water canteen, flashlight and sometimes rope. By the way, the term we used for the blade was hunting knife, although the closest I came to hunting was scrounging for a can of corned beef from the supplies. I still remember my favorite knife I used for several years--long, shiny, high quality blade with an ivory handle. Some carried bolos and axes in their gear, but not on their persons. I did see other Filipino Boy Scouts in jamborees with bolos at their side. And we did have to use these bladed weapons--clearing brush for the camp, chopping firewood, cutting rope, whittling tree branches for tent stakes, etc. This was also when I learned to respect the live blade. I saw many minor live blade accidents brought about by inexperience with live blades. The worst incident I saw was, a Scout pulled his knife out of the sheath while holding the sheath. It was a cheap knife, with an even cheaper sheath. The blade cut through the threads holding the sheath together, as well as the Scout's fingers. There were minor cuts as well while preparing food, setting up camp and, one time, shaving (not sure if he really was shaving, trimming his sideburns or just showing off). I wish I could brag I did my bolo y daga sumbrada drills while trampling through the woods during these camping trips, but this was during my pre-FMA days when I was but a novice judoka, and a tenderfoot Scout. ------------------------------ From: mccfamily@plexis.net (Dan McConnell) Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2001 23:03:53 -0500 Subject: eskrima: seminar Hi Digested Members, Modern Arnis of Ohio will host the fifth annual Modern Arnis seminar here in lovely Hilliard (Columbus), Ohio on Saturday April 7th 2001.
