I will incorporate them all in my training. Kevin, next time we train I'll work on that scowl. :) A few questions were asked: If it saves my life I can always buy a new one. As for how good is the "armor", I wouldn't stand there to let him stab me, that's for sure but as one other had said, it IS something between my arm and the blade. It isn't soft leather but it isn't true Leather armour either. It's almost like fighting with a suit jacket on -- although not quite as bad. See above usually not, but from reading other posts, i think it may be from now on. I hope that all on this digest would play defender in the kind of situation I'm referring to. A note: My best wishes towards a quick and full recovery for Mr. Terry. Again, thank you all, Mike _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: kalkiusa@netscape.net (Mikal Keenan) Date: Wed, 07 Mar 2001 12:10:39 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Knees & Things > I have found more problems with the thai pads > and the slapping of the foot against the pad > has caused more pain recently. I'm assuming barefoot ... good reason for keeping the shoes on. Then we have just the impacting forces to deal with, no sting from slapping the smooth surface. If I feel a sting with shoes on I know that I've hurt a blood vessel (again). > The original post mentioned knee problems and > I might dare suggest that this is down to other faults. ... which might include a need for more preparation. Even when not training we need to do "maintenance" work for the joints ... knees, hips and spine ... always. Before doing anything which places demands on the knees a good practice is to slide the kneecaps around on the surfaces with which they articulate with legs extended, like polishing a mirror clockwise/counterclockwise. I do this first thing every morning after stretching hamstrings and before stretching quads. After a few other things I stand and do inward then outward ankle circles, knee circles, then hip circles. For knee circles ... rest the hands on the -front- of the knees, then keeping feet flat on the floor draw circles with the knees, first with a moderate/shallow bend, then a lower bend. Do this every day. There are many other ways to work this, but something simple that we will reliably do every day is most useful. The other advice, to start slow, makes sense, eh? We should never just jump in and start slamming the body around in any way. In general, rapid changes in level of activity are a bad idea. In other words, we should neither start nor stop abruptly ... warm up and cool down phases are necessary. They should both include limbering activity to spread the fluid around in the joints ... before to keep from grinding joint surfaces together ... after to help resolve any joint displacements caused by the activity. Not >much from stabbing, but there is added protection from slashes. >Ray Terry Kevlar vests help a bit due to their thickness, the same amount of leather or cloth should also help. Kevlar just isn't the right stuff against cutting. I guess they make those kevlar gloves cause it sounds 'bulletproof'. I remember having kevlar envelopes, you couldn't tear them, but they were easy to cut. Something like steel guitar strings or little metal plates sewn into the glove in the right manner would help much more. And for the trench coat, I remember a finnish man who fought the nazis in civil resistance said he needed alt least a 6 inch knife for a kill cause of the heavy coats the germans wore. Shorter knives wouldn't kill. And the finnish do have *sharp* knives.
