What Law Enforcement officer in the world would look twice at a person with a pencil? Yet, you can use this pencil to stab into hundreds of vulerable areas of the body and cause anything from mild pain to death. Remember: The PEN is mighter then the SWORD. Many Thanks, Bear ------------------------------ From: kalkiusa@netscape.net (Mikal Keenan) Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 17:06:16 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Awareness One of my Nam Vet siblings reinforced what I consider an appropriate level of awareness in moving around through the world. No matter how capable or prepared we may be, we need to be able to maintain an appropriate level of awareness re: the potentials for AMBUSH. In his experience, ambush was the name of the game ... he related some experiences of situations where he was pinned down by ambushing fire ... or in face-to-face trench encounters where neither expected to encounter the other. IMHO, the only place where I can afford to daydream is at home (and even then I'll keep a firearm in easy reach :-) Maybe it's my N.E./MidAtlantic roots at work ... maybe it's subconscious 'ambush' indoctrination ... maybe it's just realistic. Many crimes have a lot in common with guerilla warfare it seems ... ambush being the name of the game. Both of my Force Recon (NCOs) sibs agree on this point ... the first was in the CIA "war" and will not talk about it, but considers the blade the! worst thing to face in close quarters. Both agree that what was going on "over there" was not different from what goes on here, i.e., in the "civilized" world ... just a matter of level of intensity (e.g., crime of various types involving violence or not) ... essentially a conflict btwn those who obey the laws and those who refuse to obey the laws. So, if ambush is the name of the game, how does our training prepare us for dealing with ambush as opposed to expected "interaction"? I was using a "Stubby" when I left a slash in the meat that would have opened up any major vein/artery I needed to reach to cause fatal damage. Whoever isn't respecting the damage smaller, faster blades can do needs to take a little reality break. I knew a number of guys who died because of small caliber bullets and small knives. Bigger is not necessarily better in the hands of someone who knows what he is doing. ------------------------------ From: "Tom Valesky" Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 19:32:30 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Western Martial Arts -- worth looking at? In puttering around the net, I've run across a couple of sites like http://www.thehaca.com that offer instruction in medieval and renaissance Western fencing. I was wondering if any of you FMAers have had experience with any of these folks, and what your evaluation is. Do they have anything to offer a martial artist? =========================================================================== Tom Valesky -- tvalesky@patriot.net http://www.patriot.net/users/tvalesky ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 19:46:08 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #124 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
