To die in Milton Keynes: Brrr! What a thought! You can hit arteries with a sharp implement half that length, but accuracy is at a premium. I seem to remember that Tuhon McGrath had some pertinent points regarding the use of short blades. I believe he thought that reverse grip was more appropiate and stabbing favoured over slashing. Presumably fighting with a short blade will approximate empty hand fighting in its form with preferred targets being on the surface, e.g. eyes, throat, groin etc., rather than "deep" targets such as heart and aorta. I am not sure about defanging the snake with a 3 inch blade - would one use it more as a hook in reverse grip to pass the attack? I have never really understood fighting in the reverse grip. Would its efficiency increase if one fought with a short blade in each hand? As my instructor once said the art is our armour. This made me remember an article that Burton Richardson wrote once about his first stickfight with T. Dog. It said that because of the light armour and heavy sticks, he thought that they were going light, but after the first swing, he was realizzed that Eric was relying on his stick to protect himself. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I kick the bag Muay Thai style and karate style. Bag work is probably only 20 to 40minutes of my work out. I have a slight problem with my left knee from a skiing accident. Lately I have noticed my left big toe is numb on the bottom. My right toe, I can tell is similar but not as bad. I wear tennis shoes when I kick. The floor is concrete so I definately wear the shoes. I am also 48. Any body else have a similar experience? If so, do you think it is anything to worry about at this stage. I don't want to hit 50 or 55 and not be able to walk. (Last year I had a problem with my arch and switched shoes for work and started wearing tennis shoes to work out.) hudginsg@msn.com ------------------------------ From: "John Bennett" Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 23:07:35 -0600 Subject: eskrima: The BIG D ! - March 24, 2001 Carlos Machado & Walt Mason invite you to participate in the 19th Annual "Big D" ! Of course, I speak for myself though, and I wouldn't want to face any knife unless I had my button on the trap door release to send the bad guy down the shoot. ===== Chad chad@fullcontacthi.com Full Contact Stickfighting Hawaii http://www.fullcontacthi.com http://www.egroups.com/group/stickfighting __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Surely that comes down to the way we train and stress methods. Sparring is one sort of methodology but even within that there is a comfort zone that doesn't prepare us for the street. But I do try and put the student through some stress throughout their time with me. Stress training throughout the curriculum can help the student deal with the sudden rush of impulses that occur in sudden attack situations so they don't freeze. And before anyone says that they won't freeze because they full contact spar I have seen plenty of examples in real life to know differently. Its one method but there are a range that you need to go through which is why the experts at courses give you topics other than just hitting each other.
