This is due to the friction of that area with the shoe I believe. Show inserts might help but - no medical opinion - I would say the activity is not the cause. Proper shoes shouldn't be skimped through cheapness. I had a freeze numb sensation on the thigh for a while which the doc put down to the wear on the hips etc. Thinking about it right now it has cleared up since I started wearing inserts and the reflexologist worked there. I avoid snapping the knee type kicks because of knee problems as there to much stress on the knee. From: "hudginsg" > Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 19:16:07 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Re: Numb toes I am working out only about 45- 95 minutes twice a week. I kick the bag Muay Thai style and karate style. Bag work is probably only 20 to 40minutes of my work out. I have a slight problem with my left knee from a skiing accident. Lately I have noticed my left big toe is numb on the bottom. My right toe, I can tell is similar but not as bad. I wear tennis shoes when I kick. The floor is concrete so I definately wear the shoes. I am also 48. Any body else have a similar experience? If so, do you think it is anything to worry about at this stage. I don't want to hit 50 or 55 and not be able to walk. (Last year I had a problem with my arch and switched shoes for work and started wearing tennis shoes to work out.) Hope that helps pat ------------------------------ From: "Jeremy Bays" Date: Fri, 9 Mar 2001 11:00:37 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Re: Short Blade This is EXACTLY the point that I was trying to make. I found out from a former Police officer friend that one (not the only) of the most common "long" knifes on the street is a common kitchen knife. One (again, not the only) of the most common "short" blade knifes is the 2-3" pocket knife. Given the choice between the two, I would choose to tackle the short pocket knife, especially if I were also wearing a think leather coat (remember this is what started this thread). I have gone toe-to-toe with a kitchen knife once in a domestic arguement that I had the "pleasure" of stopping. The attacker was in a rage and not thinking clearly. He presented the knife to me-point first, and held it out. This screamed to me..."PLEASE disarm me quickly before someone gets hurt". I did. The attacker calmed down and things turned out OK. The attacker later thanked me for taking the knife away from him before he made a big mistake. I was wondering if any of you FMAers have had experience with any of these folks, and what your evaluation is. Do they have anything to offer a martial artist?*** Tom.. I started practicing Fencing officially this past summer 2000. I am a member of the Southern New Jersey Fencing academy.. I am in the process of being certified by them to teach Saber.. I started training in Saber for a few reasons. One being to help enhance my skills in FMA and MA.. Fencing is a Martial art. though for some reason some don't seem to think that way... I wanted to learn Fencing-Saber to have a wider range for covering other kinds of trained attackers with the blade. its one of the reasons i study some Japanese's swordsmanship as well as a few others.. for me it makes sense to cover the different kinds of attacks you may face to understand what your core art will give you... Personally I believe it made my core art more flexible and it made sense to do it this way. I know a Few other FMA instructors that are fencers and i believe Uncle' Bill de Thouars is a classical fencer on top of his amazing ability's in Silat and the Indonesian-Chinese art forms that he teaches.. oh and he is Wicked with that Knife of his..... and a fine example of what the mix of arts have done for MA skills... if you have ever seen him move or teach you can see the classical fencer in him to be sure... honestly if you ever get a chance to train under him you would understand what i mean by this statement.. I believe Guro Mike Casto here on the digest can vouch for his ability's and knows what i mean... Another reasons i started studying the art of Fencing was i wanted to have it as an option for the Victims program that my organization offers to shelters as a healing module, that we will apply flow and motion to for focus and self empowerment. What did i find out about the art of fencing once i started it? well with my core art being FMA and add the components of the Spanish swordsmanship that is part of it... I found that Saber and Fencing was Wickedly easy to learn for me and my instructor thinks i am nuts because i switch my hands when i practice with him. i sort of messed with the lad for the first month i was taking lessons from him. when he would turn his back to me, i would put the blade in my left hand and do the same exercises.. he would look at me for a wile and say.. are you left handed? i would just look at him and wait till he turned around and move back to the right hand... well it has to be fun as well as practical for me..... Ms J grins Wickedly...... One of my Instructors in FMA told me that everything is the Hubud I looked at him and told him yes but everything is also a weapon... one of the training components that is part of our classes in Woman's Awareness and Self Defense covers just that subject what is a weapon and what can be used as a weapon with the legality's of it on both sides of being trained in an art or not so. to make the slice of the pie sweeter once you have learned the weapons skills from the FMA your range of accessible legal things to carry or use have opened up enormously...
