I did fence and coach fencing for over 10 years and I find that the training is invaluable for teaching timing and distance. This is of great help with single stick, knife and espada y daga. The drills for teaching proper distance and how to break ground are in my opinion better than those I've seen in other martial arts. Also, fencing has a progressive pedagogy that can be adapted to FMA successfully. Unlike teaching most martial arts, fencing requires the instructor to take hits constantly which helps get the timid student over the idea of hitting. Just my .02 cents. James M.
