Fisk" Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 13:53:05 +0800 Subject: eskrima: "datu" title Mr Ernest Brook, - -- since "Datu" is a cultural, social and legal title in the Philippines, - -- Malaysia and Indonesia, the use by a non-Muslim does raise some - -- very real questions You are correct about the status of the title 'Datu' represents. However, I would like to inform you about the issue, at least regarding to the status of the title in Malaysia. The spelling in Malaysia varies, and you will often see the titles datu, datuk, dato', datok, interchangeably. If the title is conferred upon a male, his wife will receive the title datin. The title 'datuk' can also be directly conferred upon a female, but in such, her husband will not receive any title from it. The title is not something that is conferred upon a person without any significant importance. The title is used by Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and Muslims alike. As such is the case, I wonder what those "very real questions" you are referring to would be. I believe that it is usually given by the reigning Sultan of a state for a person's contributions to the State or country in some manner. So you cannot just step out of some village with some silat training and say that you are a 'Datu'. I know of people who have been given the title for high ranking political posts in the federal and state governments, school principals, bank managers, business men, etc. The list is quite endless. People are awarded the title for many different reasons. In fact, without trying to offend anyone, many people seem to think that the title can be bought. It isn't much different from the titles of 'Lord' or 'Sir' found in the United Kingdom. In ending, I have not seen any martial arts practitioners in Malaysia using the title 'Datu' or any of its derivatives as a rank in a martial arts system. I do not claim to understand or even know of its use in Indonesian or Filipino martial arts. There may be some other Malaysians or people familiar with Malaysian customs on this list who know more than me and would care to enlighten us all. Someone might actually be in touch with Guru Jak Othman? Thank you. There are articles on various styles of silat such as :Lincah, Gayong, Lian Padukan (sp?), Harimau Berantai and others. It is well worth a read for anyone interested in SE Asian arts, as most of the authors are based in Malaysia. It costs $6.00 / £4.00 and is available quarterly. I'm tired in going in circles. We have seen in past post the term DATU was not exclusively a muslim term. Before using the term publicly I discussed the meaning with several instructors of filipino descent including Ernesto Presas, none of which thought it was muslim only. The common answer was that it was a Filipino term not just muslim. Had this title been only a religious term like "Arch Bishop" then I would not use it. We must remember that the title was awarded by Remy Presas a Filipino! I don't know why you have it so bad for me. There are a bunch of other "white boys" using this title both in and out of Remy's system. I guess I the lucky one that gets all of your attention. I've wasted to much time on this topic. I think it would be best to agree to disagree. This is my last word on the topic. If you want the last word be my guest. The common answer was that it was a > Filipino term not just muslim. Just to clarify, it appears to be far more broadly used than in just the Philippines, i.e. it is used in Indonesian and Malaysian (and ??) also. I think the bottom line is use the title if you will, but be careful about using it in cultures/countries that are knowledgeable about what the title truly implies. Yes? Can we now put this thread to bed, again? Thanks.
