How do you see them similar / different?<< Using the common 27-28 inch sticks as the reference point: The Serrada group (#3) grips much shorter sticks at the very end so that it seems as if they have no punyo. The Largusa-Villabrille group (#4) grips longer, thicker, heavier sticks at the very end also; and so it seems as if they too have no punyo. But both groups do have, and use, punyo techniques --it's just "hidden". Members of both groups are on this list, so it would be best to leave it to them to explain their art. And while we're at it, on a related note, if you're wondering... (1) How the Villabrille-Largusa group manages to wield their longer, larger, heavier sticks and axe handles while gripping them from the very end... (2) How they manage to get their heavier sticks to move as fast as the lighter ones... (3) And how they , get their heavy sticks to overcome their momentum and change directions so quickly... You can ask them that too! :-) (It has to do with assistance from the feminine hand; physical laws as they apply to pulleys, levers & fulcrums; and the metaphysical! But that's for them to reveal!) ;-) ------------------------------ From: "tim hartman" Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 04:27:46 Subject: eskrima: Balintawak Grandmasters??? I hope this doesn't cause too many problems. I have seen a couple listings for Balintawak seminars with different Grandmasters listed. I may be wrong but I thought that the only person that Ancong Bacon allowed to teach his art was Ted Buot. If someone could tell me who these other people are and how they fit into things I would appreciate it. Actually we don't grip our stick at the very end, but about one to two fingers up from the bottom. Enough butt to hit with, but not really enough to use to disarm, or be disarmed. > But both groups do have, and use, punyo techniques --it's just "hidden". > Members of both groups are on this list, so it would be best to leave it > to them to explain their art. Perhaps. But what do -you- teach? > (2) How they manage to get their heavier sticks to move as fast as the > lighter ones... We also tend to use thick heavy sticks. I have seen some one hand techniques on the mentioned videos, but I can't do them with an oak stick. Perhaps it is possible with a bamboo or rattan stick. Do you use a wooden cane for your training? Do you practise defense against knive or eskrima sticks with a cane? I have never tried defenses against short weapons with a jo. Do you feel that difference with one teacher, who teaches both?
