This month's Blade magazine has a good article on cutting tests (it's marked as the "June 2001" issue, but that's what passes for "this month" in the magazine market). One test I liked for small knives is to hang a paperclip off a string and clip a sheet of paper in the clip. Now cut the paper without pulling it out of the clip. A fun test of arm speed and knife sharpness. A few years ago I was at the New England Bladesmith's Guild seminar and one of the demos was a ken-jitsu student doing cutting tests on an "arm" made from 1" green bamboo rolled with wet tamani (sp?) mats, which he said the samurai in the old days knew from cutting tests on prisoners closely duplicated a human forearm. As expected, the katana cut the text "arm" in half, but what really impressed me was how well the custom made bowies of the knife makers there did. I think the smallest bowie to completely sever the test arm had a 7 inch blade. The New England Bladesmith's Guild seminar is held the 3rd weekend of September each year in Ashokan, NY. Sword and knife making using a variety of techniques is the main component of these seminars, but a good bit if history and some fun demos are usually included as well. Some of the most famous knifemakers in the country share their knowledge at this seminar and it is well worth the small fee. Food and lodging are available on site at a surprisingly reasonable rate. I'll be giving my 4th demo there this year at the seminar and it would be great to see some ED members there. For more info contact: The Ashokan Field Campus 477 Beaverkill Rd. I have to say that these arguments, although they are thought-provoking, do not seem to have any resolution. I will offer my own opinion now on this whole thing. First: I don't agree with Hock on some things as far as teaching pedagogy for arnis, his many "plans" or "programs," or his knack for cutting the traditional martial arts as being ill-fit for self defense. I personally have found that all arts contribute to one's vocabulary of reactions in combat. One's boundaries are defined, however, by their SUMMATIVE, complete knowledge of any one (or more) self defense art, style, etc. Hock makes a huge point of this -- a bit overzealously, but he definitely emphasizes this. One of our listers has a good point: completion of an art is a tremendous step in understanding an art's attributes in self defense. Aside from the disagreements I have philosophically with the man, though, no one should ever doubt his skill in the Filipino martial arts. Granted, the last time I saw him was two years ago: yet, the Filipino drills he demonstrated were very sharp. That's simply the fact. What he teaches HE knows very well. I haven't seen any of his students much in the past two or three years, but Hock definitely has great skill in the martial arts (although he hates that term). For someone to assume that he hasn't had much experience in the FMAs is a ridiculous, uninformed statement. Do your homework before you publish something like that, be it through an E journal or paper journal. The man studied with GM Ernesto Presas himself for an extended period of time in the Phillipines for more than a year or so, for God's sake! Hock is trying to carve a niche out for himself in the market world. Therefore, he has to have a different angle in order to be competitive in such a market. I don't begrudge him this, although I don't really agree with some of the ideas he propagates about the self defense world or the other martial arts out there. So, if you don't like it, DON'T BUY IT! I'm sure this message will garner all kinds of negative comments, but I am going to refrain from replying due to the copious amount of cyberspace this entire line of discussion has eaten up. I end this message with the statement that I respect all of the people with whom I have had the great pleasure to work in the past years, and all of my experiences were educational (be they by example or non-example). You did not say if your looking for stick fighting or empty hand (or both) but from the tapes it looks like a great place to train. I do not know if they do any stick fighting at the gym but I would recommend checking them out. Matt a great guy with an open mind.
