I know of a couple of self-designed "instructors" who are held high as "accomplished martial artists" ... self-promoted, bits-and-pieces-"trained" leaders of men. They're quick to let people know "You owe me some money" for the haphazard stuff that they present. "Back in the days" no one asked to be instructors, we were asked or we just trained. This was true with both my Chinese and Korean teachers. Mitakeyu Oyasin. Be well, Mik BTW: Did anyone see the human genome documentary? It's calculated that we share about 50% of our genetics with Banana Trees! Talk about distant relatives!!! That's a stretch. __________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Webmail account today at http://webmail.netscape.com/ ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 8:33:12 PDT Subject: eskrima: Decampo Info sent to me from http://clix.to/decampo FYI... Ray - --------------------------------------------------------------- De Campo JDC-IO was popularly known in the martial arts community as De Campo Uno-Dos-Tres Orihinal. Like most Filipino martial arts, the weapon of choice is the olisi which is made of fibrous rattan sticks. The method is basically long range or Largo Mano. Only the last two inches of the olisi or garote makes contact with the target. There are three primary targets: the weapon hand or elbow, the eyes, and the knees. Much of the "style" remains shrouded in mystery unlike the more popular Doce Pares and Balintawak systems of Eskrima. The reason behind this secrecy is that the exponents of the method, the enigmatic GM Jose Caballero and Ireneo Olavides were always wary that the art could be plagiarized. The techniques demonstrated by Olavides in PG Edgar Sulite's book The Masters of Arnis, Kali and Eskrima were basic Eskrima common in close quarters styles and not of De Campo. The practitioners of De Campo would also like to caution the aspiring students of the martial arts that some self-styled masters often declare secrecy to project an aura of invincibility. Most often secrecy is an excuse for mediocrity and lack of knowledge. We don't fall into this category. Instruction format is the old traditional one on one, student/teacher training. The most appropriate comparison would be the Dundee-Ali-trainer/boxer tandem. Because of the systems emphasis on anticipation, speed, accuracy, power, and the instructors close supervision of the students progress, teaching en masse may not produce proficient apprentices. An instructor can handle competently a maximum of only four students. However, this is not encouraged by present instructors. At present there are only a few active practitioners in Mindanao who are tirelessly developing the method. Olavides who has recently come back from "semi-retirement" has always encouraged his students to study other disciplines and has never dishonored or criticized other eskrima styles- a true mark of a martial artist and gentleman. De Campo is an alternative system for stick fighters who prefer to fight long range. Fighting ranges vary from one person to another depending on one's size, physique, height, motor skills or simply his own personal choice. We never claim to be the best or better than other systems specializing in medium and close range fighting. We would also like to serve as a half-way house for beginners of Filipino Martial Arts in order to guide them in picking the most effective system suited to their personal style and physique. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 8:36:18 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #189 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
