I'm a fan of Guro Dan stories, and have related one too many times, but in case you're new to the list, here's a quick recitation: At a bodybuilding-oriented gym in Va, recounting one seminar (back in the late '70s), when the relatively, um compact, well-conditioned, sinewy, guest seminar instructor walked into the room, one of the giant (6'3 240lb) lifters who was also saw the beginning of the seminar, comes over to where some of us were doing squats the next day and said: '...that little guy...at the seminar, yesterday...he could, uh, kill you, easy...' He knew little of Guro Dan and this was his 'vibe' seeing him walk past him, picked up from who knows what: gait, presence, intensity, hadn't seen him -do- anything... We chuckled to ourselves, knowing him, and having been to seminars... Of course what stands out about him is his gentleness and kindness, and soft-spoken ways... - -B ___ baj7dvirginia[dot]edu Arnis Lastra/Arnis Lanada ------------------------------ From: "Johnaleen" Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 21:13:05 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: Guro Cuesta Seminar yesterday Doce Pares Seminar Yesterdays Doce pares seminar At Rutgers Un. This was my frist time to train under Guro Cuesta and Ken Andes.. And I am very glad I went. I learned many things and was able to refresh much of what I have been trying to learn here and there in my travels in this system. I was glad that he taught some of the more advanced level to this system, As it gave me more of what I had not learned yet so far. The 4-hour seminar covered: Solo Olisi- Doble Olisi- Triangle X-step foot work- 6 count progression stick disarms- 4 count progresson knife disarming- Stick Locks against attack- Empty hand locks 12-count progression The seminar was finished off with Espada Ya Daga- Basic Defence- Karenza-7counts- Locks Guro Cuesta I am told has 30 years exp + in the FMA and you could easly tell this both he and Ken Andes are awsome to be sure. I have Pictures and will do a full report for the FATE org soon and have it on line. but if you ever get the chance to train with either of these men. Don't pass it up because the experance behind them shows.. Below is Guro Cuestas Web site where you will find his contact information. http://www.doceparesusa.com That and Guro Cuesta is just such a fun teacher. you can really tell not only is he proud of his art and skills he really loves what he is doing. We are hoping to bring them down for something this summer at the beach for FATE organzation. PS. It very true what he saying about the Kali word and other term. Gat Puno Abon: Fact# 00 Arnis also mentioned in Tagalog epic, Florante at Laura in one of the staza of the poem, ( Larong bunot Arnis, na kinakitaan ng liksi at bilis). Wrote: by Francisco "Balagtas" Baltazar on early 1800's. Esgrima words is print all over different book printed in the 50's "The Book of PAETE written by Eugenio Quesada During Paete town fiesta as early of 1717 host a yearly esgrima/escrima tourney on the town plaza depend to the rank of later swords procession. Gat Jose Rizal practiced Arnis at Escrima together with his friend in La Liga Pilipina Heneral Antonio Del Pilar, Juan Luna and others. This fact also records in many historical book in PI. << Fact #10 The earliest technical description about eskrima/arnis was available only lately. The very first known book available in public was Yambao's book in 1957 Fact #11 Many modalities in eskrima/arnis/estocada like espada y daga are also found in European fencing arts. Gat Puno Abon:Very true but this is because of the "Moro Moro" Komedya, Zarsuela play" they have to portray the Battle of the Catholic Soldier over the The Muslim of Granada Spain, and they used their Espada y daga to hide the true meaning of the art being practice in the play. Off course we adapted them and refined technical aspect later. So spicifically, the Espada y Daga is adapted by FMA'tist on early 1600's during the introduction of Moro-moro play. Fact #12 The once Spanish colony of Venezuela in far away South America also have their own form of stick fighting. The Garrote Larense stick fighting art of Venezuela reminds one of eskrima. There must be a connection between these two martial arts somewhere and further research is needed. >> Gat Puno Abon: This is what the Venezuelan trying to proved it, there are no evidence yet found to clarifies the arts being originated from the Philippines or some sort of connection. And their way of fighting is totally different approach than the Filipino Arts, I was there last Feb. I gave the First Garimot Seminar of Arnis/Buno/Hilot attended almost 50 practitioner and 15 or 20 of them practiced Garotte Larense, I have the opportunity to see it first hand, and watch the tape that old master demos, it was something different than FMA approach. It good too. all in all, thanks for the info, its a great, Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet Laguna Arnis Federation International US Harimaw Buno Federation Hilot Research Center USA ------------------------------ From: Troy Sheather Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 23:29:19 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Reviews on synthetic sticks! Hi all, I am living in Japan and am having difficulty finding a decent supplier of training sticks. Therefore I am looking into synthetic sticks that should last longer. I want something as close to possible as rattan or hardwood and I am leaning towards the Jeff Finder Stickman line of products. Before I purchase anything I thought I would just ask for opinions on these or other training sticks going around. Also training knives? I notice the sharkee once seem to be fairly popular. Opinions privately or to the list are welcome!
