Since the average TKD sparrer is not used to a continuous flow, the openings usually appear readily. What's also fun is using alive hand and siniwali flavor inserts during traditional TKD/Korean forms practice. This really gives the patterns a nice 'complete' feeling, as though it was really always part of the form. - -B ___ baj7dvirginia[dot]edu Arnis Lastra/Arnis Lanada ------------------------------ From: "Ashley Bass" Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 12:51:02 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Re: Swish of the Kris You can read chapters 1-19 (or 18) on the Bakbakan web site at: http://www.bakbakan.com/swishkb.html FWIW I found them enjoyable. I don't hold anything against you or anyone who would have such a well thought out opinion. I would have to say it is a little harsh, but not misplaced. I heard a similar, albeit toned down version of the same thing from the Kali instructor I visited. I hold nothing against any art, even TKD. They each are only as good as the practitioner who applies it. As far as when I have taught escrima, all I teach is what I've learned. Unfortunately I didn't apply myself well enough to teach more than the 12 basic strikes, blocks and counters. I can disarm and apply empty hand techniques, but your summary is right... I am not a proper representative of either art and shouldn't create poor students. Perhaps I've grown up somewhat. I would like another chance. I will not blame my former instructor for my lack of dedication. His instruction, dedication and abilities are among the best, I'm sure. This forum has actually re-sparked ( if there is such a term ) my interest in Balintawak and all other FMA's. I've always looked at escrima as a secondary art because that was all I knew. But to sit here and read story after story of dedicated FMA practitioners who take it all seriously... it's inspiring. There is only one instructor that lives in this valley I know of who is a master of Balintawak. I will contact him and see if he still teaches, and if so, if he will take me. If not... Kali it is. I hope I do better this time and don't detract from any FMA. Thank you for your time, Keith Hay ------------------------------ From: "Robert Klampfer" Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 16:07:54 -0400 Subject: eskrima: An informal teacher's survey For the teachers, an informal survey: Not including seminars, what is the average length of your student retention? Not hours per day / week / month, etc. but the total length of time that your average student studies your curriculum, i.e. two weeks, six months, one year, etc. This includes anyone who studies more than one week, so as to exclude transient students / guests. What is the ratio of students who attain full instructor status or are issued an instructor's certificate in your art / system? (A number ratio such as 5% or 1-in-10). How long does your average student who attains full instructor status take to achieve that status? Again, one month, six months, one year, etc. If your system has separate instructional rankings for (example) unarmed, stick, knife, etc. feel free to differentiate between the categories. Please feel free to send me your responses directly. I would actually prefer to receive them directly. I agree not to publish or otherwise disseminate the results by name, email address, school affiliation, etc.; only as a percentage of the aggregate results. If anyone has any clarifying questions, please contact me. Regards, Robert Klampfer ------------------------------ From: "James M. Seetoo" Date: Sun, 29 Apr 2001 02:25:14 -0400 Subject: eskrima: FMA and other training Al Sardinas makes some very good points and he knows good teachers when he sees them. Most of the board would probably know him as a student of the Garimot system however Al is too modest to say that he was previously a student of Tom Bisio in New York. While I only know Gat Puno Baet by reputation, Tom's reputation as a teacher speaks for itself. James M. As usual he was in phenomenal form and shared a great deal with us. Our friend Tommy "The Whip" Meadows was promoted by Manong Cacoy to 6th Grade Black Belt after the seminar, so he is now Master Tommy The Whip...
