My roommate in my freshman year of college 'acquired' a box of various stun guns (he had access to a police supply store). Freshmen + stun guns = a lot of discharged 9 volt batteries. Suffice it to say I have been zapped more times than I can count. You know what? Those things are worthless. At no time was I incapacitated, at least not to the level I would want an assailant to be. They might have value as a deterrent and / or as a distraction during a fight, but I wouldn't bet my life on them. I think it would be most cool to see someone do Stun Gun Y Daga with a big chromed bowie at night, but I digress. Note: I have not been hit by a Taser. From footage I've seen they can be effective, but perhaps that's because the electrodes stay attached to the baddie. I don't know from experience. I also don't think pepper spray is all that great, but that's another story. I know Erik Knaus recommends him highly and praise from Erik isn't easy to earn. Here is some correspondence between myself and one of Dave's students. I don't think he will mind my reprinting portions of it here. We were at (Pekiti and Pentjak) seminars together in upstate NY (late 70's). Very smart guy. Dave told me about fuel cell technology 20 years ago that we are just getting around to implementing now. I haven't seen Dave since then but have heard many good things about him (he was Erik Knaus' sparring partner in the pre-DB days). Please give him my regards. I've done knife sparring with stun guns instead of practice blades. It hurt a bit less than a hornet sting. Before everyone says "Oh, but that's not a REAL stun gun. It's the wimpy civilian-issue ones. COP stun guns are much different," I will have to assure you that isn't the case. These were umpty- ump-hundred-thousand-volt-special-square-wave-and-amped-up-police stun guns. The fine print I've gotten with every set of instructions mentions that it is "most effective" if placed in continuous contact with the eyes, throat, center of the chest, or genitals for at least 3-4 seconds. I contend that if you can hold it to someone's goolies for four seconds you aren't really in a fight. > It seems some of the thrusting techniques work nicely > with the stun gun, and there may be less legal issues because, at least in > my area, a stun gun is not considered a lethal weapon. Comments? In your area, as in any area, a stun gun shouldn't be considered and effective weapon. In LFI-II getting zapped with a stun gun is the signal to empty your magazine at the target downrange. According to Mr. Ayoob it doesn't slow the students down at all. Personally, I think he's insane. It's a miracle nobody has turned around and plugged him in an adrenaline moment. ------------------------------ From: "R.J. But he wasn't the only one Tuhon Leo Gaje was proud of and had mentioned a lot . Tuhon Bill McGrath. Although he is humble enough to praise Tom and what Tom has achieved, we here in this ED especially who never met Tuhon Bill don't know how lucky we are that another " great one " shares his knowledge in this digest. You gotta meet the guy and as far as everyone who has met him will agree that he is just as great a person than he is a FMArtist. One of the great reasons why I am proud to be affiliated w/ the Pekiti-Tirsia system is because Tuhon Gaje just knew how to choose the ones who would one day be great FMArtists themselves. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 8:25:54 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #214 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
