I wasn't there in Korea, but if Korean TKD 'players' were losing to Muay Thai fighters what would we consider to be the essential factor in the wins/losses? I don't ask this for myself (I got my own opinions :-) but for the sake of the forum, i.e., to "instigate" another discussion :-) I wonder, for example ... what were the ring rules? This reminds me of the San Shou/Muay Thai issues ... the Muay Thai guys complained about the San Shou throws, the San Shou guys didn't like the Muay Thai elbow. I guess that elbow was coming into play and raising H. OTOH, some San Shou guys were knocking Muay Thai fighters out with throws. Hit'em with the ground, eh? Mitakeyu Oyasin. One of my students once asked me about the way that I had him training the midlevel and lowlevel round kick: "Is this a Kung Fu round kick or a Muay Thai round kick?" I replied "It's a round kick." Basically, I was teaching a blend of Kung Fu and what I learned with Rick Faye's Minnesota Kali Group and others in the JKD blend of things ... added the Thai "technology" for training the kicks ... not new, Shih Fu used to send people to train with his Thai buddies before fighting full contact. As most of us probably acknowledge, the conditioning is beyond compare. Mitakeyu Oyasin. At best they are were 50% > effective on the street with my department. Just to add something to the mix, one of the guys who used to fight with us in our full contact practice was an LEO from Largo, Florida. He had been a street cop for almost 20 years and had turned down several sergeant's exams because he just liked the street- about 6' 3" tall and strong. He had a standing bet in the department that any new guy fresh from the academy could hit him with any stun gun he chose, if in return he could hit him with a right hand immediately after! The word got around, and for years the new guys would never take the bet, because they had heard about all the guys who got knocked down by the guy who just got stunned. A case of marketing over functionality- they just don't work, in most cases. Steve - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). I suspect that they might be, but as defined they are both Korean kickboxing / muay Thai. Perhaps they are different the way that Eskrima is different from Escrima. :) Kyuk Too Ki is rather well known in Korea and they have done well against the Thai players over the years. Perhaps the events leading up to the creation of this Kun Gek Do are apocryphal or perhaps this person didn't know that a style of Korean muay Thai already existed or perhaps this KGD even predates KTK... who knows.?. > I wasn't there in Korea, but if Korean TKD 'players' were losing to > Muay Thai fighters what would we consider to be the essential factor in > the wins/losses? I don't know that the story is accurate, but assuming it is, the muay Thai players were probably just up against TKD players that were not conditioned to taking leg kicks. That is not a typical part of sport TKD training & conditioning.
