There it is ... like I once said in discussion with Rick (Faye), ayt fighting method can be trained to a high level (e.g., of reliability and effect). "Back in the days" of my first kung fu training we had a youngster in his early teens who could jump spin hook kick people into oblivion before they'd realize that he'd moved. He was a -consistent knockout- artist using the jumping/spinning hook kick. Imagine what that became as he matured and put on a little more muscle and power . . . Although I favor low kicks for speed (all limbs Rapid Fire) the other stuff can fly out whwnever it wants to ... as it should IMHO, i.e., where the body "sees fit". Sometimes, when we're not in its way, the body can surprise us with what it chooses to "emit" in the midst of action. That's the best stuff, no matter what it happens to be, high, low, whatever ... as long as it operates well within the situation. When guys come to me talking about their grappling or their power I ask them how they would fight in a restaurant, theater, or workplace (e.g., office with cubicles, desks, etc.). Raises some eyebrows. Sometimes the environ demands greater wisdom from the body, so that it won't hurt itself while trying to protect itself. What would work well in a modern techno-office for example? I once angered an avowed grappler by describing how he might knock himself out or worst by grappling someone to the floor near his desk. Whose head is going to hit the desk on the way dow! n?:-) How close together are things ... chairs, tables, etc.? What do these constraints suggest about fighting methods? Mitakeyu Oyasin. Peyton is a crusty old bird who has a unique combination of martial arts training and way too much live-fire experience for any sane person. But more importantly his adrenal stress condition training, is about one of the most effective, eye opening experiences a martial artist can have for making his art a living thing. There are a lot of people who can talk theory about fighting, but that's as far as it goes. There are a lot of serious pieces of real estate out there who can eat the lunches of 99% of so-called trained fighters. Peyton happens to be a rare combination of both. He is both an intellectual and a brawler. He can show you depths that most people don't know exist. But these depths will totally alter and influence everything you know about the MA." __99%__, Animal? Isn't that a bit of an exaggeration? I know you have the McDojos out there, but they hardly represent 99% of the martial arts instructors out there... The "realistic combat" approach seems to me just as much a promise of "pie-in-the-sky" kick-ass-in 10 easy lessons-no-matter-what-fitness-level-according-to-my-three-page-add-martial arts they like to bash. For a beginner with few skills and less than average (okay, maybe average) physical ability, no amount of eye-openess will help them against an experienced tough guy on the street. What ever happened to hard core training and conditioning? We seemed to have replaced it with "winning tactics" and "military/leo/street fighting" experts...ALL of whom have martial arts backgrounds! Bottom line, I believe dedication and hard work will pay off to a degree with one year of full-time study. I don't think Paul is trying to attain an expert's rating in one year, but he also doesn't want to pursue the easy, 10-lesson kick-ass-or-your-money-back "phenomenal new approach to combat" program. In which case he could just take a one week camp or buy the videos. She didn't have a lot of time to learn a self defense system and was looking for a tool to drive off bandits. She settled on the combination of a sock puppet and a peizo-electrically ignited blowtorch. When Bad Men approached her the dialog went something like this... Bad Man: "Hey, gimme..." Blowtorch: "*hissss* *click* *FOOM!* *roar*" Her: "Talk to the puppet. No, no. Talk to the puppet." Puppet: "Whaddya want? Whaddya want?" She said nobody got any further than that. Yowsers! What a definition of "advanced age"! As a person with one foot in the grave I agree. I think FMA is a more "mature" art, similar to Tai-Chi. In one's youth one wanted the flashy stuff and collect belts. Now, closer to the other end of life, one has: a) less time and therefore less inclination to waste it on katas and such, b) lower BS tolerance c) more understanding of reality (one hopes!) and therefore inclination to go after things that work, d) less of an concept of ego ( I really hope!) and meaningless "honor", allowing one to hit other people with hard objects rather than bare hands, e) more weight and less wind making the triple spinning jumping back kicks an unrealistic proposition f) worrying about one's belt colour only in as much as it matches one's shoes I would say more but am late for the Seniors' Bingo Mike Koblic, Campbell River, BC ------------------------------ From: GatPuno@aol.com Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 23:39:43 EDT Subject: eskrima: Combat Arnis info and WUMA??
