I received an Email from a Modern Arnis practioner in Bielefeld (a town in Germany far away from Mr. Knuettel). I answerd his mail on may 9 with some comments about the information published on the Modern Arnis Webpage. Mr. Dieter Knuettel somehow got and translated my Email. He then published the translation on the eskrima digest without asking me. Im not a member of the eskrima digest and a friend of mine informed me about the dicussion about my Email in the eskrima digest. Since my mail was not intended for a public discussion forum, I will need to add some Information. I visited Eskrimador Arnolfo Mongcal in 1991 and in 1999 near Cagayan de Orocity in Mindanao. My Eskrima Teacher Eskrimador Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete gave me the chance to meet Eskrimador Arnolfo Mongcal. With the permission of my Teacher I visited and I trained under Eskrimador Arnolfo Mongcal. Without Cacoy's help, Mr. Mongcal would not have taught a stranger. This is what Eskrimador Arnolfo Mongcal told me during our meeting: - - I was teaching Remy Presas only because he was a relative of my wifes family. - - I was teaching Remy for about six months when he was still a teenager. - - I never received any recognition from Remy. - - I never received any Peso from Remy. - - I was the only Eskrimador who was teaching Remy Presas. - - Remy Presas is a Traitor. Mongcal felt Presas had betrayed his family and his Eskrima. Eskrimador Ciriaco Cacoy Canete and all his sons know that Mr. Mongcal was the only Eskrima Teacher of Remy Presas. If you believe this information is inccorect than please let me know: Where do you get your information from ? Do you have facts from independant sources, other than what Mr. Presas and his students say. For more info, please contact Uli Weidle at email pekiti-tirsia@gmx.de or see http://www.pekiti-tirsia.net/seminars.htm The intensive training camp is open for anybody interested in Filipino Martial Art, Weapons or empty hand combat and realistic self protection strategies. It is recommended to take part in the whole camp. Daily booking is optional. Regards from Germany, Uli Weidle For those interested, here is a short info about the ongoing training camp with Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje: Reutlingen, 19.-25. May 2001: In the week of May 19.-25. the Pekiti-Tirsia Europe (non profit org.) organizes a training camp with the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Grand Master Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje from the Philippines and european coach Uli Weidle from Reutlingen. For the camp there are registrations from ten countries, some participants traveling from India and Canada particularly for this camp. Topic of the ongoing training camp is the philippine combat art Pekiti-Tirsia Kali: physical conditioning and training for full contact stick fighting, practical knife combat and unarmed fighting. Focus is on bridging, dumog clinching counters, (stick) chokes, takedowns and pins. After the training camp Uli Weidle and the Filipino Grand Master are invited from the Bavarian Police as special trainers to conduct an official police training on "Appropriate behavior for police when threatened with knifes and other close-range weapons". A similar event has happened on special request of the regional police command in Reutlingen. The demand for training with grand master Gaje is so high, that many prospective seminar attendants had to be set on waiting list or rejected. Despite his tight time schedule the grand master agreed to introduce an additional seminar date at short notice directly following police training in Bamberg, so that more people have the possibility to train directly under his guidance. Once its fluid volume begins to decrease, a muscle fiber cannot contract optimally. Also, however, sugar is necessary. Fluid volume and blood sugar determine our ability to continue working, so we have to periodically ingest both water and sugars ... fruit sugars in particular because the gut is slow to uptake anything else once the sympathetic nervous syatem kicks in. Fruit sugar (fructose) is absorbed faster than anything else, and there is an optimal concentration for its rapid uptake (check out some runner's info). I typically go through 4 quarts of fluids when I train on Saturdays (5 hours). An easy rule of thumb: Take a few swigs every 15 minutes. I usually take a single swig every 5 minutes so that I don't load the stomach and upper small intestine too much ... that way I don't have to decrease work inte! nsity (no sloshing around that way). On the broad toopic of supplements I simply advise moderation ... after getting the facts (who did the research anyway?). Check out Muscular Development mag, they often supply a good helping of truth. Watch out for anything which makes unnatural changes to hormone levels. No telling what that means for future cancer rates. Even herbs that manipulate testosterone levels can cause shifts in "mindstuff" (i.e., steroids aren't the only offenders). Mitakeyu Oyasin. Thank you HM ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 20:29:25 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Dr. Gyi Baton seminar review Dr. Gyi UN Baton Seminar Review Though I have been hearing about Dr. Maung Gyi for the last 20 years, I first had a chance to meet him was last summer at his knife seminar in NYC. I was so impressed with his technique and teaching style that I asked him to give a seminar for my class in Fishkill, NY. When I discussed what he would teach we chose his UN Baton course as something that would fit in well both with Pekiti-Tirsia stick work and with my LEO baton curriculum. Well, after 26 years in the same martial art (especially an art as technique rich as Pekiti-Tirsia) it is refreshing to learn something new. This we did at Dr.Gyi's class. The UN Baton course focuses on the 36 inch riot baton and specifically on close quarters techniques with that tool. The techniques utilize a two hand hold of the riot baton, both to help prevent disarms and to avoid the overhead strikes that look so violent when shown by the news media. The program was divided into two parts, blocks and grappling. I had been working on some two hand blocks for use with a walking stick, but Dr. Gyi gave us some new techniques that really expanded our repertoire (techniques for the 36" riot baton work nicely with the 36" walking stick). The grappling moves Dr. Gyi taught concentrated on chokes and come-a-longs. Many of the chokes I was familiar with from Pekiti, but what made Dr. Gyi's class such a joy for me were the numerous new variations I learned, making these techniques much more flexible in use. Another highlightof the seminar were the techniques Dr. Gyi taught with the paracord thong attached to the riot baton. This thong made for an easy to apply and very effective control device. One facet of the class that everyone enjoyed was Dr. Gyi's teaching style. For all his wealth of teaching and combat experience he remains a uniquely approachable instructor, motivating with humor rather than harsh criticism. We had attendees from several states at the seminar, including Guro Zach Whitson, PTI State Director from Tennisee, a SWAT officer who flew in from Minnesota and a Captain from West Point who drove up to observe the class. The seminar ended with Dr. Gyi showing us some massage and stretching techniques from Dhanda Yoga, which made for a great way to cool down after the seminar. During the seminar I explained to the participants why I invited Dr. Gyi to my school. Aside from his excellent technique I explained the man has had extensive war exposure and teaches very practical techniques. He has also dedicated his life to honoring veterans who have died serving our great country. One of my main reasons I invited Dr. Gyi up here is to say "Thank you" for helping so many veterans and their families and for them to realize that their lives were not lost in vain. Dr. Gyi comes regularly to New York City to give seminars at Vincent Giordano's school (email Vinny at: NYCAinfo@aol.com). He will also be teaching at the Dog Bros camp in LA in July (http://www.dogbrothers.com/trcamp.htm). Dr. Gyi is in his mid-seventies, so he won't be teaching forever. I strongly recommend that you take advantage of the opportunity to train with this unique instructor while he is still teaching.
