He had several hidden around the house. He typically had cords attached from 1 1/2 to 2 hand widths away from the base. Grandmaster Mena also had a stick that he claims belonged to his father that had a cord attached at this same distance. Mena was also from the Visayan region from Ilo Ilo, Panay. Mena had fought in full contact matches in the late 30's and early 40's and mentioned that it was not uncommon for fighters to use bastons with cords. Mena is unique in "my" experience in that he was able to show me news paper clippins going back as far 1951 showing him demonstrating FMA's. He also had a placard with the year 1939 with the membership of the Tondo Arnis club which included F. Dizon in it's membership. Note: Mena changed the name of his practice to Arnis once he moved to Tondo in the Manila Area. As a child learning from his father it was still called escrima. More info for the "fact" files. Cheers, Elrik >>Not really sure I've personally seen any Eskrima sticks w/cords attached. This style of cord/stick arrangement is frequently used w/the Korean Dan Bong.A short stick (~12") used in Hapkido, etc. The cord can be used to manipulate the stick or to increase the reach and/or velocity of the stick. That challenge >was accepted by Guro Baet. As a neutral observer, it was very clearly an intentional, open challenge. I could read it no other way. I read it as "Due to illness, GM Presas is not in physical condition to fight; I was one of his fighters so, fight me instead". I was in admiration of someone whom (I thought) had the courage and conviction of their beliefs to issue such a challenge. Gat Puno Baet accepted the challenge in good faith and without apparent malice. I thought his acceptance was very cordial, actually. He even offered Rocky the option of defining the specifics (pads - no pads, rules - no rules) of the match. I expected a gentleman's duel, of sorts. I'm quite disappointed by the backpedaling. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 19:04:15 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #257 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
