I have been required to walk with a cane most of my life, my 2 main instructors time wise during my life were both short men one being 5-8 the other being 5-3. 70 % of my privet instruction life time in FMA has been with male instructors that were under 5 foot 8 some even smaller. most of my main instructors have had military experience either in or training them. what i teach for an art is a combination, and basically core FMA.. a few small difference's are there is a stronger link with the joint locking techniques that i teach with the art and the silat footing is high lighted more. its more combat street orientated with the mix of traditional art to balance what i teach. a few years back i heard the term eskirido.. i was with my business partner at the time and well we had never heard the terminology, we had no clue what it was. then it was described to us as a mix of aiki-fma-silat-- we sort of laughed at the time because well... seems we had been doing the art all ready, he for many many years. i as well to some extent until 3 or so years back when i started working with the joint locking techs in Aikido. i cant be tossed so taking aikido as a full art will never be an option for me, but i had a few locks already as part of my basic stuffs, that i was taught as a young adult but no where near the range of options i do now from really working with the joint locks and incorporating them into the fma, the foot work of basic silat and FMA combined with the body shift, work very well and are totally appropriate in my humble opinion, for woman, small men and the handicapped. the fact that i was handicapped for many years helped me greatly understand some of the concepts behind silat and the FMA... i walked with a cane most of my life and had problems with my back, i could not be tossed to the ground and have to avoid it in a fight especially when having to save my life, so the combination of the 3 has kept me mostly off the ground in a fight, that made it even more valuable to me when i understood that these combinations would save life's, with the added proof over my life time in realty situations, I have managed to save my life a number of times in my past by applying the concepts to my survival in a fight or defending myself against much larger opponents. you did not have to be one of the big boys to be able to survive being as i have read here in ED commentary a few times "Slammed and Jammed by the Big boys......... " this is just my personal Opinion based on my Life time education and real experience.. and my license to Learn being applied. this works for me and it seems to work for many that are not large and have the power behind them that can be produced with the added height and weight of the larger framed person both in defense and in attack.. best way to find out what suits you, of course is to play with it, take lessons, and work it out some. then decide. i am a firm believer in options and that each person needs to find what suites them best based on there body type and personal needs. Ms. J. bows deeply....... ------------------------------ From: Bladewerkr@aol.com Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 18:00:10 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #272 Rambling thoughts on a few past posts. First I would like to clarify that these are simply my own observations so either take them with a grain of salt, skip the reading of them, or reflect on them to see if they ring true to you. Please if they antagonize you or you feel offended, respond to me personally. Having said that I am somewhat embarrassed by the recent round of "challenges" aired on the list. We are all, supposedly, adults and martial artists. We should hold ourselves to a higher standard than posturing and woofing. To begin with, if someone really wants to "challenge" someone it should be done personally. I once wrote a thesis in college concerning the outlawing of the code duella and the fall of western civilization. I still feel that they are intimately tied together. What I have seen posted, were simply editorials. In the days of sabres for two, coffee for one. The person issuing the challenge presented it in person, if the challenged party accepted they had choice of weapons and time, location usually agreed on by both parties. Then the following day or so (giving both parties time to think on the wisdom of pursuing the matter) the seconds would make the final arrangements. I am not, by any means, suggesting that anyone participate in such actions. However, I feel that if members of the group have a problem with one another, it should be settled personally, therefore not subjecting the others on the list to having to deal with it. I mean come on, a great number of us are teachers, and the martial arts are already under attack in many areas as causing violence. What kind of signal does this type of behavior send out. would you want your child to place themselves under the guidance of someone that goes about conducting themselves in such a manner? Are some of us so insecure that we feel we have to challenge someone in order to not lose face? Sounds kind of like junior high school to me. On the other hand, what good is cyber war? Does one party "win" because they type faster? I have no doubt that all of the people on this list have the courage to fight and the skill to make a good accounting of themselves. What is there to prove? Usually the winner is determined as much by luck as anything else when two warriors clash. As a culture we have become obsessed with our "right" to get in each others face. Aren't we striving to be better than that? I for one believe that there are as many opinions and points of view as there are grains of sand on the beach, and everyone is entitled to theirs. And I believe that an opinion, however contrary to someone else's can be presented with respect and courtesy. One of the things about this type of discussion is that you are removed from it. If you read something that pisses you off, you have the luxury of letting go of it and coming back later. Have a great weekend all! I'm not sure that any particular art is best, but you might look at the people who developed or refined the various arts. Here are some generalities I've noticed in my 40+ years of exposure to various arts, and I feel they apply equally to men and women. Japanese are short, muscular people. I feel they are the masters of attitude and power. They needed to develop maximum power because they are not very large people. Their primary attitude is that the only way they will be beaten is if you kill them. Karate works well for short people. FMA's were developed and refined by short people. I feel their arts are more currently practical and deadly because they have been defending themselves against outside aggressors and internally among themselves much longer than many others. I feel they are the masters of batons, knives and short swords. I also feel they put a heavy emphasis on deception and footwork because since they are not very large people, if they are struck small people generally do not absorb as much punishment at larger people and would be more likely incapacitated or killed. I like their emphasis on simple weapons because it is more logical to first use a weapon, if one is easily available. FMA's work well for short people. Koreans are generally taller, have longer legs and they also are muscular. The older Korean stylist I have known can hurt you from a distance with their feet, and if you get past their feet they are very good with their hands and have very deceptive throws and breaks. They also put a lot of emphasis on power. Korean arts can work well for short people. Chinese are generally lighter weight people and I feel they are the masters of speed and deception, although their country is so large they could highly refine many arts, both empty hand and weapons. Some of their arts focus on build of the practitioner, some on the mentality, some on the agility, etc. But Chinese art's can work well for short people. Russian and Europeans are generally larger or bulkier and generally put more emphasis on power arts similar to wrestling and boxing, and they are very good it them. These arts can also work well for short people. For any art to be successful and effective it must include movements that work well for a variety of body structures. Some that are effective for tall people may not be as effective for short people, and vise versa. Most most arts include both, but you need to learn both to be able to really tell the difference. The popular (and often misunderstood) saying about "keep what is useful" can only be true after you learn both what is, and what isn't' useful. ------------------------------ From: "Rocky" Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 21:28:49 -0400 Subject: eskrima: I'm back and that ain't my tail between my legs!! Extremely long sorry. Well not so long Ray has made me clean it up a bit it, ( I can somewhat understand were he is coming from) but since a few guys tried to attack my character, I just thought they would love to see the true character of the guy who they choose to stand by oh well, the original is available for your veiwing pleasure may be I should charge for it ???. First of all I think its time to set a few things straight, and hopefully Ray will let me have my say ( at least partially ), now that I am back up and running. I recently moved, had to go into hiding you know. Anyways I went with the cable modem thing, which is cool, but everytime I tied to get my e-mail from Outlook express, it would shut my computer down. As it turns out this was somewhat a blessing in disguise, its amazing how many wanna be's come out of he wood work, if they think you are scared. So lets see which hooligan should I deal with first. Oh yea! lets go with my main man, Ray the gasoline man who wrote: > "Remy says I fight like Ted and Ted says I fight like Remy I take them both > as compliments. And a good way to find out if Remy knows what he is doing is > to play, train, or fight with me, I am always available..." > > To which Guro Baet said, essentially,,, Ok, sounds like fun. > > Ray "Gasoline-man" Terry This is exactically what I wrote, but!!! Trash can man, why not write, the first paragraph, which indicates who this post was aimed at???? Let me refresh your big brain.. >First of all Uwe or who ever might forward this to him, let me say that >I feel to be one of the most qualified to respond to to your post, >because of my unique relationship with Remy. By the way my student Hal, who happens to have a really big brain, and 3 Doctorates too boot, said that while yes my writing skills are about as good as Stevie Wonders driving skills, my opening paragraph clearly dictates, who I was addressing. Now the funny thing is I got baited into a pissing war, ( as Doc Fung seems to think I was trying to do, its O.K Doc, I forgive you. But you may wanna ease off that gas you use in your office) any ways like I was saying, with this Uew Shwartz guy it turns out he may not even of said what he was suppose to say, any ways he thought I was insulting Moncol and Cacoy, to which I aured him I would never, do, GM Cacoy, and GM Buot are friends, and I would never do that, and this Uew guy and I seem to be cool. Then Gat who I will get to later, seemed to wanna show his ability to beating up a Modern Arnis ( former ) guy like he did so many times in the Philippines. And when I in my typical smart ass manner replied that I couldn't figure out why he thought I had challenged him, his little buddies came running out to call me names. Now Magen and Mrs. J, in a nut shell both of you ladies are some what correct in your various posts on this subject, as far as a macho, or beating of the chest thing, I just don't know what to say its a guy thing, and this politically correct world ain't going to change in 20 years what it took nature eons to develop. Now too know more on the high archy or male dominance or ego thing, you must talk to one of the big brained guys like Crafty, Animal, or Tuhon B. they are into all that big brained stuff. I still can't figure out why my sister has 2 brothers and I only have one? Go figure!! KEN JO...... Please don't worry about me honoring GM Bacon, or GM Buot, I honor them every time I pass on their art. If your problem is with me than so be it but don't drag my instructors or his instructor into it. I also believe you are the Knuckle F%4K that likes to to make quotes. Well here is one I learned from my Uncle Altonio, before he went on a 50 year vacation, I think you'll like it, its very popular in the streets were I use to hang in Detroit, are you ready it goes like this " NEVER MISTAKE AN ACT OF KINDNESS AS A SIGN OF WEAKNESS" Now doesn't that make you all warm and fuzzy inside. Robert KLampher, Lets see what do I think about your opinions, Well.... let..... meeee..... think....................... NOTHING your opinions are about as usefull as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. No no that's not fair, come on Robert, tell me what you think, I could do with 2 minutes silence!!!!! Todd.......... Why for you pick on me like you do I thought we were budds, I mean I was pick'n out wall paper and comforters and every thing! I am so hurt, I i i i caaan barely finish this pa..pa...possst......... oh the anguish my aching heart .......... OK I am over it lets continue. AL AL AL what can I say but.......AL..........., you are a true reflection of your instructor............ Speaking of my pal Gat, well here we go again. Sorry Gat if you misunderstood what I was writing or I misunderstood what you were writing, it should have ended their, but nooo you even wanted to try and dig up old issues with GM Tabaoda, which shows your true nature since, Gm Taboada and I are cool, we had a misuderstanding in which I thought he was threatening me, we talked on the phone, at which time I found him to be a very nice man and a true gentleman, it would do you some good to hang with a guy like him!! He and GM Buot talked on the phone, and everything has worked out I have met many of GM Toboadas students, and they have always been very nice and very well trained even the one in Buffalo who I had a little spat with, so I don't know what you were trying to do here but hey that's just you. Now I did try to keep things private between us, but you just wanted to keep running me down and running me down till it got way out of control. So Gat lets see what kind of guy you really are, here is the private e-mail I sent you and your shall we say colorfull response!!!!... I would never use a different name to post something, if you had any sense you would just ask Ray who sent the un signed post. Use your head for something other than scareing small children. You give me way to much credit, I can barely figure out how to turn a damn computer on let alone finagle my e- mail stuff, right now I can barely get my e-mail since switching to a new provider. Now Gat , if what GM Buot can understand of your post to me is right, it seems you have an issue with my mother something about her being a whore, and me being crazy or a Son of a bitch, or something to that nature. Well Gat if this is true. Then you have changed everything. It no longer has nothing to do with MA's, at this point you should just shut up, trust me you really don't want to bring my family into things. I realize you are not a very desent person and lets just leave it at that. I feel sorry for your mother , I am sure she is a wonderful woman, and even the best of parents can have dirt bag kids, I hope I fair better as a parent then yours did. Oh And Crafty......... now u didn't tink id forget bout mi favrit cridick. Crafty what's this mean?? >You shoulda payed more attenshun wen I tryed to hep youse wid yor precishun >in Inglish I cee nuffn wrongh wit the obove centanse, u mus b gettn hit tu much! Top dog...I'll give you Five bucks, that's five big one's to take Crafty out back and beat him till his Inglish gets better!!!PLEEEZ!!! Ok enough this issue is dead with me, I just thought that the resident coward should have his last say! I will try hard not to post anymore on it. You may now return to your regularly scheduled ED stuff. Rocky " Running scared " Pasiwk, hey I like that better than Guru, Maesto, Master hell I think I'll keep it. P.S GM Buot says things have sure changed , he never heard of a GM with such language!!!! Shame Shame P.S.S. I hope this post finds everyone happy healthy and full of love and Joy, Like me!!!
