My father in law has been in a cancer hospice for the last three months with inoperable lung cancer. We began to see a marked decline in his condition since this weekend. This afternoon his doctor called my wife and told her that he has just hours or at most a day or two left. Under these conditions I didn't feel it was right for me to go to the seminar and leave my wife alone, so I called the seminar sponser and rescheduled the seminar for the weekend of November 3rd & 4th. I apologize for having to change the date on such short notice, but these situations are impossible to predict. If you get the chance, please say a prayer for my wife's family to help get them through this differcult time. However, how would you rate or compare your style's empty handed component in terms of effectiveness, both on the street and in full contact tournaments/NHB fights, especially those of you who do not cross train with any other empty handed arts. It's rare to see a fighter outside (sic?) the stick fighting community who fights empty handed in tournaments/NHB fights, who fight under the sole title of arnis, escrima, or kali. Comments?" Interesting question. In Inosanto Blend for example, there is a substantial empty hand FMA curriculum and Maphilindo too. In my opinion, there is A LOT of merit here. However, to fight in NHB one must have grappling, and little of the FMA grappling has reached these shores. Silat has lots of grappling, but it often is weapons oriented, and, if I may offer an opinion in a respectful spirit, the possibility exists that the secrecy levels common in Silat prevent the kind of day in day out rigorous testing and honing that one finds on on any decent BJJ school's mat. I'm not saying Silat grappling alone can't suffice for NHB purposes, but I haven't seen it-- and I readily grant that given the secrecy levels that certainly is not proof that it isn't out there. That said, if one acquires the basic grappling skills, then in my opinion a kali-silat player could surprise a lot of people. (Guro I. can be MOST impressive behind closed doors when he shifts into kali-silat during NHB training.) As a matter of fact, recently someone came to me with this idea in mind, and the plan is to prepare for about a year and then put this idea to the test. :-) Woof, Crafty Dog PS: Something else to consider is that self-screening may have a lot to do with what we have and have not seen so far. The physical and personality types suited for NHB tend not to go into FMA. ------------------------------ From: "Bill Lowery" Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 18:09:55 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Re: Arnis book by Wiley Hi Tom, >I know this group is forgiving of the linguistically impaired, but what I meant to say was that each article was by a different author...< Erm, nope. Some of the authors (Krishna Godhania for instance) have more than one article. I mention this simply because Krishna mentions my club (Laban Baston) in his article about Eskrima in Europe :-) Bill 'The Pedant' Lowery ------------------------------ From: Marco Subias Date: Thu, 21 Jun 2001 08:52:30 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Filipino food I just made pork adobo from the recipe Stephen Lamade kindly provided, and it was extremely tasty. It was also very easy to make. I'll be making chicken adobo this weekend. Thank you Stephen. BTW, for those in Los Angles, a new Filipino restaurant recently opened in Culver City. It called "Bahay Natin," and is at 10032 Venice blvd., in a small mall. It is inexpensive, and while I was not overly impressed by their pork adobo, which was just ok, the chicken adobo was quite good, and I had a sort of beef and vegetable stew (I don't know much about Filipino food, and don't remember the name) that was very good. You get two main dishes, some soup, and heaps of rice for $3.79. The people who work there are friendly, and happy to explain what each dish is, to those of us who need the help. I've been there a couple of times, and I'll go back. They also have Filipino deserts and drinks.
