A rare opportunity to learn from the elders of the Nederlands Pencak Silat Bond or the Netherlands Pencak Silat Union. I've received notes of excitement from Europe on this opportunity, it's rare that such a collection of teachers gets together to teach (semi-) publicly.... Jim Ingram has recently returned from Holland. He has arranged with the Pentjak Silat pioneers in the Netherlands for a series of workshops in August 2002 in Dordrecht and Amsterdam. The workshops will feature the following: Paatje (Bapak) Phefferkorn S.H. (Setia Hati). - It was a close call, but almost Paatje Phefferkorn would never have doled out another "sapu" (sweep), because when he was liberated from a Japanese prisoner of war camp, he weighed only 21 kilos (46 lbs). Very fat he didn't becaome after that, but his fighting style and knowledge he took with him to Holland. This is the fascinating life's story of a man for whom Pencak Silat is much more than just a martial art. "I started Pencak Silat in 1931 in Bandung when I was about 10 years old. It really came about by accident, because (continues at) http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/7045/Pukulan/phefferkorn.htm Paatje (Bapak) Nelson (Pamur Bandai) - Now already 65, time has been kind to him. He looks younger and his moves still have the flowing and at the same time forcefulness so characteristic of Pencak Silat. As one of the members of the 'Council Of Elders' he still occupies a prominent position in Pencak. He himself, modest as he is, won't know of it. "To me, it is a great privilege to be allowed to be a part of the Council and to cooperate with the other Paatjes. Continues at http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/7045/Pukulan/nelson.htm Paatje (Bapak) Hebpy Vincent (Poekoelan Betawi Combinatie) Paatje (Bapak) Theuvenet (Tjikalong and weaponry) Paatje (Bapak) Maurice de Thouars (Pak Serak) Honorary guest Dolf de Vries, eldest son of the legendary Ernest "Ventje" de Vries There will be a group from the U.S. going to Holland and staying at a resort in Zeeland. The workshops will be at night, leaving the day free for sightseeing. Tentative Information: Dates: August 5 - 9, 2002. COST: $250/person for a week at the resort $150/person for transportation $50/(non-member)person for all workshops (members are free) People are responsible for their own airfare and food. A situation similar to "You use a pistol to fight your way back to the rifle which you were stupid enough to leave behind". (Or in modern Philippines, you use the knife to fight your way back to the car where you were stupid enough to leave the firearm) Empty hands are a second choice to weapons, simply to get you OUT of the situation to a weapon if need be. (granted if you are in a situation where you absolutely can't carry some type of weapon, all you have to do is look around and you'll be surprised at what is available that will hurt a hell of a lot more than what empty hands can do.) I won't compare the effectivity between empty hands styles, too subjective. On the other hand, try this out. Have a training session with a grappler, go against him with one of those thick marking pens used for marking crate boxes. See how many times you can mark him even WHILE he's taking you down. Don't think he'd try it if you had a knife instead of the marker. One of the reasons why NHB style fighting never really took off over here in a big way, is the fact that thier method of approaching combat in OUR reality will probably get you killed. NOW HERE is a FILIPINO recipe for those who can handle real cross-cultural cuisine. DINUGUAN Ingredients 1 kilo pork face (literally the skin and meat of a pigs face) 3 cups fresh pork blood 1/2 cup vinegar (filipino white vinegar available in any filipino food store) 1 tsp black pepper 1 large onion 4 pcs. chili peppers 5 cloves garlic patis (fish sauce) 1. clean pork 2. boil pork in water, throw water out after it starts boiling. Start proceedure again, throw water out 2nd time after water boils. 3. cut pork into cubes 4. saute garlic onion, pork until brown. add black pepper. add 1 cup of water and boil. 5. In a separate bowl, add vinegar and fresh blood, stir & mash till blended fine. Add it to the sauted pork, stir to prevent coagulation. Add patis to taste, slow cook till tender. DONT cover while cooking. ------------------------------ From: Plumador@aol.com Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 02:54:29 EDT Subject: eskrima: Crafty Crafty, in the last issue, you wrote this at the end of your message: <> Can you elaborate on this?
