Richard Killick wrote: << Gat Puno from a fma view point, does your system look at the issue of fighting in groups. What are your strategies for fighting with groups which out number you. Do you actually train group fighting or do you find people "slot in" with their skills, learned during individual one to one training. Do you address the problems of dealing with mutipal attackers? >> Richard, Yes, we practiced multiple and group fighting, most of my training is deal with this situation. Like I said before if you fight one Filipino, you will fight his, brother, uncle, neighbor, friends, or the whole town. This is ferfect example of war. We have a lot of drills, that deal with Multiple attackers, from stickfighting, we start with two, then three, four, to up to as many as in the room. This way everyone reaction are test into a high level of defense, and offensive action. The same thing in Harimaw Buno (Filipino Wrestling) we teach and practiced, drills multiple attacks, standing wise we used similar to Aikido approach, but more direct than Aikido style, small circle techniques, more pain, and on the ground we used the Unggoy(Monkey) and Harimaw(Tiger), exercise that can move to one position to another, sitting, laying to kneeling controled position. I experience to be attack and used the techniques effectively in Ten strong Mens when I used to teach in Eastern Laguna Colleges, back in the 80's that caused me to be banned for teaching in fighting in Arnis. I won the battle in hand to hand fights but not in courts decision. We praticed a lot of bone breaking techniques, that what I used when I was attacks, so at the end of the fights, I was arrested and brought to trial and lost in courts. That make me think what to teach my student, running techniques called "Sayunachi" (Sayo na ang Chinelas ko) or the real deal, well I teach both they need both. Without running I could be the one in the Hospital and beat up real bad, thanks from the "Sayonachi" techniques it works all the time, like a charm. Jivta Wrote: << According to the article, he studied jujitsu, read japanese, practiced sumiye (zen drawing), studied arnis, dumog, suntukan and fenced at Sala de Armas y Carbonell in Spain. >> I dont know about Jujitsu, in his real authobiography he mention that he study the art of Samurai, yes he speak Japanese, but he does not stay there a long time, just few months, before going to Cuba. Dumog?? he don't even used that word as art, he is Tagalog and he never mention to his diary that he practiced any type of Filipino wrestling even Buno for that matter. Suntukan is alway part of any arnis system in arnis or Mano y mano the term he used to his teaching. Two of his student is from Paete, where I was born a great sculptor Jose Caacan and Mariano Madrinan whom won the gold medal in his arts from Kings of Spain to his Obra Maestra a piece of art of Virgin Mary an to his Biography, Dr. Jose Rizal is pascinate fencer, Eskrima or Arnis Experts, Well I might say, I assumed that the writer may be Visayan, Dumog is Visayan word for wrestling. just thought, Luis Pellicer, I witness also that kind of incident, here in Florida. Two Filipino has history of fight over Basketball when they see each other in Dolphin VS Buffalo Bills games, later on the parking lots he saw the Filipino are fighting Bills fans and he help him , then later on they settle there differences again, now there treat each other like brothers. Well the doctor's prediction turned out to be accurate. My father-in-law passed away early Thursday morning. I doubt there are any smokers on this list, but perhaps you can pass this on to those you know who do. My father in law died after many years of smoking a pack a day. He spent the last four months of his life confined to a hospital bed 24 hours a day because of inoperable lung cancer which had spread to his brain. His family watched him waste away literally to skin and bones. While his motor skill were affected by the legions on his brain, his cognitive functions were not, so he was aware of what was happening to him up until the last two days. >> I quit smoking 2 1/2 years ago after 30 years of a 2 pack a day habit. My incentive to quit was having three doctors tell me that at 44 yrs old, I had developed a heart condition that would kill me in short order if I did not quit. Today, I feel like I am 25 yrs younger, and know that quitting is the smartest thing I have ever done. I used to feel that there is nothing more obnoxious than a reformed smoker, but if every smoker could feel the way I feel today as opposed to when I still smoked, they would stamp those damned things out without delay. I know of two master Eskrimadors who died from conditions directly attributed to smoking. The eskrima world suffered irreplaceable losses when we lost these men, and both men left behind families. How sad, the hold that tobacco has on people, and the lives it continues to ruin every day. I know of many, many martial artists that smoke, and I try, no matter how obnoxious and irritating I am, to remind them that they are literally burning their lives away. I'm curious to what you all think the advantages are of Silat over FMA and which is better for self-defense? Also, I'd like to know how the training is different. Thanks for the help. Arik ------------------------------ From: "Jay de Leon" Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 09:28:19 -0700 Subject: eskrima: My final word on Jose Rizal To Gat Puno Abon: Thank you for the treatise on Jose Rizal. We have just added historian to the list of your many talents. I agree with you completely, in view of his personal accomplishments and contribution to the revolutionary movement and from a role model point of view, Rizal should have been the obvious choice of the national hero of the Philippines, the other great heroes notwithstanding. What is the relevance of all this discussion to FMA? To me, these men stared death in the face everytime they stepped on the battlefield, or picked up a pen to rail against persecution. With pen and sword, with underground presses and guerilla tactics, with fire-hardened lance and bolo, these men walked the walk, fought and paid the ultimate price-- death on the battlefield or martyrdom at the hands of their enemies. How much more martial can you get? To Jim Lowe: Thanks for sharing your reading, and insights on this issue.
