Any thoughts on this? Umm, one thought. Your experience of silat isn't the same as mine. We've always done lots and lots of drill in Sera class. To my way of thinking, type 2 training runs the real risk of exposing cracks in the personality to temptations of evil too great to resist. Type 2 training changes the personality and only people suitable for it should receive it." I am intrigued. Can you expand on this perhaps with some examples? I promise not to turn into a werewolf :-) Mike Koblic, Campbell River, BC ------------------------------ From: "BILL MCGRATH" Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 23:14:37 -0400 Subject: eskrima: VA schools?, Knife I just received an email asking about FMA schools in Richmond Va. I am not familiar with anyone down there. Can anyone recommend a good instructor in the area? RE: Outsiders in knife class. Two potential problems. 1. Knife work still has a bad connotation in the minds of most people. They may see stick or even sword practice and say "oh that's interesting" but when they see knife practice they think you are training assassins or thugs. I wouldn't show hard core stuff to people who aren't hard core themselves. 2. When I ran a commercial school I had a higher percentage of whackos trying to get into my knife class than in all the other classes combined. I wouldn't let outsiders observe your knife class. You would be surprised what someone could pickup just by watching. At the very least they could say that they "learned" the technique that has gotten them in the interview room with the homicide detective from you, perhaps getting you a interview as well. Not too farfetched. I know an instructor in a southern state who received a visit from the police because a guy wearing one of his school shirts stabbed a guy in a fight. It turned out the perp was the brother of a student and got the shirt from him. Ray and Crafty will appreciate this one. Daschle & Kennedy Call for Abolition of Bathtubs Washington, D.C. (CNN) - In the wake of the tragic and horrifying drowning of five children by their mother Andrea Yates in the bathtub of their Houston home, Democratic Senators Tom Daschle and Ted Kennedy have called for making home bath tubs illegal. "How many children have to die before we accept the fact that bath tubs are a major cause of death in the home," Kennedy said. He cited Consumer Product Safety Commission data which confirms that bathtubs are now one of the 5 leading causes of home accidental deaths. "It may very well be that if this severely depressed mother had not had ready access to a bathtub, these 5 innocent children might still be alive today," Kennedy added at the somber Washington press conference. He was surrounded by representatives from a wide range of liberal organizations including People for the American Way, Children's Defense Fund, and Bathtub Control, Inc.
