My own FMA instruction supplemented the FMA stuff with Silat, and lots of Muay Thai and Western Boxing. Recently I've been training at a NHB gym with a strong BJJ and Muay Thai base and have found real difficulty using the guntings and other FMA stuff. Both boxing styles have served me well, as has some of the trapping from FMA, but the rest is really hard to execute. I believe this is a reflection of the simplicity of the "kick 'em in the thigh, punch 'em in the head" focus of the boxing styles. I'm curious as to the experiences of others in situations similar. Cory ============================= From: "Rocky" Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 10:17:16 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re-empty hand Here goes my 2 cents on the FMA empty hand stuff, hope I don't get into trouble again. I bereave the FMA have a very good and sound empty hand method, I think that many choose not to explore or teach it because, of its complexity. Its been my observation that over the last 20 years in the FMA's that many of the the Gm's NOT ALL!!! just an observation of the ones I have worked with, don't seem to have what they want to teach empty handed very well organized, In Balintawak this is very apparent. Which is why GM's Like Bobby Tobada, and Villiason, and others have worked hard at structuring an empty hand format for their arts. Many a old timers I have met are very fond of saying that the hand and stick translate back and forth, which I whole heartedly agree with, however it can years and years of training and self discovery to mold your weapons training into a solid empty hand form that you can depend on and this is the problem, in today's fast food martial arts, people just are not willing and maybe shouldn't really have to wait. I think to that the mentality of the or more so the evolution of the FMA's vs. other arts is at a different stage, Fma's are relatively new borns on the scale of commercialism, and therefore have not been broken down into a simplistic format as most Karate arts, which as far as I am concerned is a good thing, but like all good things, FMA's are more and more kneeling to the pressure, of commercialism. One of the things I have noticed over the years to is that many of the FMA'ers I have worked with, will gladly give up power ( empty hand ) for speed, now believe me I think speed is a beautiful thing, timing of course is more important, but it often seems that the empty hand body mechanics is missing. Maybe others could comment on this??? After use, they were suppose to leak so that they could not fill up with rain water or other liquids. This was so any little child would not look into the bucket, fall in head first and drown. Seriously, I heard this several years ago and it was not a joke. Some people were actually pushing for it. Remember the water saving toilets and the black market from Canada. The toilets only used so much water to flush to save water. Now you can not buy a toilet that is not a water saving toilet, unless you get one black market from Canada. so instead of flusing once you flush 2 or 3 times or even 4 or 5 to get that embarrasing log flushed down before the next person comes in. What was meant to save water probably uses more water. My xrays show no degeneration of the joints, either in the lower back, knee area, or sacrum. I talked to my doc, and he showed me the iliotibial band (after I suggested what some of you fine people told me), and he agreed that could be it. I just have to rest for a month and a half with the ballistic stuff (running), get better running shoes - damn essential! - (don't skip out on this folks), run shorter distances until my body can accomodate the impact, and most importantly STRETCH. So thanks everybody for the invaluable information. Assalamu Alai Kum (Peace be with you all) Erwin Legaspi "Intellect and intelligence do not go together.
