So in response to Chris's question about training with dogs present, I would just like to say that yes, it is entirely possible to get a dog comfortable with swinging sticks, hitting the bag, and that some sticks are not for chewing! The first rule is to never play with your dog with your training sticks - they're not for him/her, only for you. Just like you should never give a puppy your old shoes and socks for toys and then expect them to tell the difference from your new ones. I only play fetch with specific toys and tree limbs. I currently have a 2-year old dobe, who I have raised to be comfortable around people training. For a short period of time, when she was about one, I was able to take her from obedience training to the dojo and she did fairly well, other than just not being mature enough to settle down in one place for too long. But for the most part she was fine and usually the guys would wrestle with her a little after class. I would say it is pretty normal for them to take an occasional hit with the stick, and that is part of the learning experience - just like a smokers dog is likely to get a noseful of smoke, or maybe a slight burn before they learn to stay away from cigarettes (unlike alot of people!). But something to consider here is whether or not your dog is "soft" or "hard" in temperment. A "soft" dog is very sensitive to being yelled at or to being disciplined, whereas a "hard" dog could take a bit of man-handling before really getting the idea that they need to listen or respond in a certain way. My dobe is not very soft and so after a brush with a stick she doesn't yelp and run or think they're the devil, she just moves to another location. Of course she's also a 65 lb dog. Every dog will likely respond a little differently. I suggest acquainting them with the training environment as early as possible, but to limit the time early on, and to be there as your dogs trainer first and for your training second as much as possible - never give them an opportunity to be "bad" or to have a bad experience if you can avoid it. My older dobe would just stay clear of training activity, but she hadn't been raised around it. Unfortunately we moved our dojo to another building and I haven't tried to continue her "schooling" there. As for whether or not she will know the difference between practice time and a criminal act - fortunately I have had no experience with that! But dogs respond very strongly to emotions and if they sense fear in you they are going to react to that. Perhaps someone more knowledgable than I could address this, but it is my belief that the pack dog mentality would take over, and if you are the lead dog in your pack then they would support your actions and probably respond to your emotional state rather than to a recognized physical activity. But that is just my opinion. For another example, I also train with Dr. Gyi who often has his dog at the training camps, and although he is an old dog now I assume he's been around the camps for many years and he is certainly comfortable with the training environment - perhaps Crafty Dog could attest to this as well? On another issue, I also have seen KOTD and enjoyed it. I agree with most of the points made by Mike and "gints" to Al's comments. But I will pay more attention to what my non-MA friends have to say about the stick scene. And now to go back a few issues and to respond to you Ray: "Try #2... Need your help. I need to update the FMA FAQ wrt GM Ernesto Presas' Kombatan. Who should be listed as the higest/higher ranking players in Kombatan? Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com" I cannot give you a full or complete answer and perhaps someone else already has. But the most obvious being, 2nd in command Master Ernesto Presas Jr. (Jan) of Daly City CA, and next for you to possibly consider the relative IPMAF appointed Chief Instructors for the various states and regions. Respectfully, Jeanette (IPMAF Chief Instructor for Michigan) ------------------------------ From: "Jay de Leon" Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 10:43:07 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Boxing videos To Roland Isla: Go to titleboxing.com, click on "videos and tapes." Who should be listed as the higest/higher ranking players in Kombatan?<< I brought your request to GM Ernesto Presas, and this was his reply: Philippines: Grandmaster Pepe Yap Grandmaster Roberto Presas USA: Grandmaster Fred Lazo Master Ernesto Presas, Jr. Europe: Master Wolfgang Schnur Canada: Master Edwin Lao There are other masters in the organization, but the above listed individuals are the ones that have been with him for decades. Special Note 1: He credits GM Fred Lazo in the early development of his art. He and Fred went through thousands of what-if scenarios, analyzing attacks, identifying the variables, from the physical (ex: the blink of the eye) to the mental (ex: hesitation), and formulating the appropriate responses. They have since gone their separate ways, developing their own arts, but they remain in contact. In fact, GM Ernesto Presas is nominating GM Fred Lazo to this year's WHFSC Martial Arts Hall of Fame in the "Grandmaster of the Year" category. Special Note 2: There is an exceptional individual, who holds no official rank, and frankly needs none (although he was an exceptional judo and arnis player in his heyday), and that is "Supremo" Eugenio (Gene) Amador. He is a first cousin and advisor to the Presas brothers (Remy, Ernesto, and Roberto) and is treated with extreme respect by all. When Remy was stuck here in the States, and couldn't go back to his family in the Philippines (under penalty of death as decreed by General Ver during the Marcos dictatorship), it was "Dodong" that encouraged Remy to use his Arnis talent to make something of himself. And so he did. ------------------------------ From: "Cory Eicher" Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 14:12:35 -0500 Subject: eskrima: FMA in Boston Hey all, my instructor Greg Goldmakher recently moved to the Boston area for his medical residency and is looking for FMA practictioners to work out with. It's hard to imagine this getting WORSE since Chuck Norris' heyday, but... At least Jackie Chan has humor. Shanghai Noon was cool. Van Damme...well, he had TIME COP, anyway. Li has the moves and is arguably the next big thing. Hard to imagine he can't find better scripts. jester >> LOL ... what a great comment! I couldn't agree more. Actually, of Van Damme's, I'd have to say that Time Cop wasn't one of my favorites (though it wasn't one of my least favorites either). My favorite of Van Damme's was Bloodsport. However, KOTD was a good script. It was based on a story written, in fact, by Jet Li. Another excellent Jet Li movie (my favorite of his that I've seen, in fact) is "Fist of Legend". It's a re-make (revision) of Bruce Lee's Chinese Connection ... but, story wise, IMHO, is better than Chinese Connection (I still love Bruce's ... but there were some plot points that I wondered about ... i.e.: if the Japanese felt their MA were so awesome, why'd they bring a Russian in to beat Bruce?) ... if you haven't seen Fist of Legend, or Kiss of the Dragon, I'd highly recommend both (Fist of Legend can be rented, or go to Amazon.com and buy it ... I don't think you'll be disappointed :-) Regards, Mike ------------------------------ From: Kes41355@aol.com Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 18:23:21 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: tracking down boxing videos In a message dated 7/10/01 7:14:43 AM Pacific Daylight Time, eskrima-digest-owner@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com writes: << Hello, This is sort of a non-FMA question. If they don't, they will surely be able to tell you who will have them. "The Ring" isn't called "the Bible of boxing" for nothing...
