Wow, it was lots of fun! We had 26 practitioners in total attendance from as far as New York, Massachusettes, Missouri, Texas, Illinois and of course Florida. We had four cancellations, out of 30 maximum delegates, for various reasons (two delegates from Wisconsin, one from North Carolina, and one from Venenzuela).I wish that they all could make it, but maybe next time. The purpose of me accepting only the first 30 to register is to ensure that there will be adequate one-on-one direct training from myself along with the help of my senior students as I'm circulating to personally guide and correct. I believe more than 30 would possibly taken more time away from the tight schedule. And as it went we never really had enough time to really follow the daily schedule. Five full intensive days of trainning included a few bruises, tired sore bodies, sunburns (not to mention "carpet burns") & tans, lots of laughs reuniting old arnis friendships and beginning new ones as well. I can only speak for myself and those that personally made a point to let me know, the five intensive days were packed with fun. We started day 1 with stickfighting followed by the introduction of Harimaw Buno, Tres Puntos (knife fighting) basics, and lastly, Hilot introduction. It was a day primarily of essential basics and introductions to the Garimot system.Day 2 moved on starting with more Harimaw Buno, followed by stickfighting, knife fighting, and again more hilot. Day 3 continued on with knife fighting, Harimaw Buno with particular emphasis on our POLICE CARE program (Police Caution Ressponse) and "Garimot Lubid techniques" (Absorbing ropes), and again closing with hilot. These first 3 days were held indoors at the Diplomat Resort Country Club & Spa in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Day 4 brought us oudoors at Haulover Beach . We started out with SIKADTUKAN or the Basic of Filipino Kick Boxing techniques, then we moved to the stick works in the morning session. After lunch we had open sparring (with a lighter padded stick) trying to utilize all the techniques taught earlier that day and the previous days. I, myself was entertained by these guys. I saw that they did absorb some of my trainning and they did a great job. Everyone participated in the sparring. We also had buno matches. I saw some great techniques displayed. And I have to tell you all that were not there, it was a HOT south Florida summer day. And there is a BIG,BIG difference in mat trainning and training in the sand. It's a lot harder to apply your technique as you find yourself sinking in the sand with every move. Any of the guys there will tell you it was a true work out between the heat and the sand. Determination to challenge their skill and lots of cool drinking water kept them going. We closed the day trainning both single and double stick in the water. We did our fair share of water trainning but I have to admit after a while the participants (myself included) found it to be more relaxing just chilling in the water with a little "horseplay" of course. Day 5, our final day, brought us to the final review of all that was taught throughout the week and then sparring, sparring, sparring! This was great to see because almost everyone picked up counter technique so it was harder to score. But then again, when someone did score BOY DID THEY SCORE! We ended the day with certificate distribution and of couse the traditional photo seesion. What a week! We video taped the 5 day event and we are in the procees right now of editing. The instructional portions will be put together and made available to all practitioners interested in either CD-rom format or VHS. When they are ready, I'll inform you. Before, I close this I want to thank everyone who attended my surprise birthday party held at my home after Wednesday's trainning. I hope you enjoyed the Filipino cuisine and hospitality. I was surprised to get home and find that my wife and daughter have busted to prepare the house for guests which I was sure to include family and close friends, but to later find ALL of the seminar participants and their families (and/or travel companions) attending this surprise party really touched me. The surprise didn't just end there. My Garimot students locally and in California all surprised me with a beautiful (and delicious) sheet cake with my logo fiercely decorated on it and a gift the really blew me away... a canoe! Thanks guys, all of you that attended and to my students for the awesome present and card I intend to have framed. Ok, so in closing, I have to tell you it's been a great 5 days and I look forward to the next Garimot Retreat. I encourage you readers to get feedback from those that attended as they share their experiences and hopefully I'll see you there next time. For those of you that did attend, I had lots of fun and hope to get togeether with you all again. You "out-of-towners" if you're in the area again give me a call and I'll be glad to have you attend a class or just get together. Thanks again to you all and God Bless... Not based on Wushu Sword, hey, which came first, the stick or the sword??? IMHO, I think that you would be hard pressed to find a style of "kung fu" that does not include some type of stick fighting. In the first school where I trained, single stick (short staff, e.g., largo mano) was the first weapon. There are some crossovers btwn various weapons insofar as how the body is manipulated and coordinated to manipulate the weapon, but we don't need to bother with thoughts on how each one is unique. Summary: Some fighting with stick(s) of various lengths ia usually a part of kung fu training. I don't think that you'll find a style that is stick-fighting per se, but you'll probably find stick fighting in many styles. Trivia: In CMA the staff is considered #1, the father of all weapons. Then comes the king spear. I think that's how it goes. Stick, broadsword, straight sword, etc. fit in somewhere after that. Fundamentally then, according to some CMA, after unarmed basics! the staff should be learned before other weapons to train the body how to move with the other weapons which follow. > I'm having pain in my back area with twisting motions, > especially if I take a deep breath first. This is THE typical sign of a rib out of place. If it ain't fractured, it's probably out of position. This can happen at either the sternaum or the vertebrae. Does the pain follow a rib? I just saw it again yesterday, and trust me, nobody can show Filipino martial arts worse than Filipino movie makers. The movie was called "Tapany sa Tapang" (roughly translated "Toughest of the Tough"). Anyway, the scene starts with leading man and woman, Lito Lapid (local action star turned governor of Pampanga province) and Cynthia Leuster at the Chinese Temple in Cebu. So local toughs say to Lapid, "hey Tagalog, go back to Manila." To which Lapid responds, "I'm not Tagalog, I'm Kapampangan (from Pampanga.)" Of course, thems fightin' words and they begin a fightin'. Anyway, the 6 or 7 Cebu Eskrima guys get pounded by the two heroes who are using karate to defeat them. In fact they each disarm the Esrkima guys and use strange non-FMA looking strikes and blocks to wipe out the Eskrima bad guys. No wonder Filipino kids want to learn karate and tae kwon do! This leads me to think one of two things: 1) The FMA in the Visayas can't be very good:) (hey, this is a joke, no challenges please) or 2) The FMA really need someone in the movie industry pushing the art to make it look better. Which leads me to ask why Ronnie Ricketts and Topher Ricketts (students of Tatang Illustrisimo) of Bakbakan International don't do anything to promote the FMA in the movies they make. Ronnie is a leading action star in the Philippines (and president of the local actors guild) and Topher is almost always the lead fight choreographer. They can do something. Instead they make movies that show Karate winning all the fights and the few guys who do use sticks in their movies always get pummelled. So there, another addition to the list of movies that make FMA look bad. Peace.
