Excellent suggestion. For example, we practice two-man counter-for-counter drills (from structured to freestyle) with such dulled machetes. It heightens awareness (added adrenaline rush), looks impressive during demos, and conserves our much more expensive aluminum swords. For the frugal FMA practitioner, keep in mind that the ratio is something like $4.00 machete to $120.00 EDGE aluminum sword. After a few contact sessions, though, make sure you file down the nicks on the machete blade, as they can often be razor-sharp and likely to cut you more than even the original blade (unless of course you are "armored"). I would also like to respectfully request for a translation of this phrase: "No awan iti DAYAW ti Arte, ngem adda laeng iti pretentado ti labanan wenno bakbakan." (As an aside, it is to my understanding that the Tagalogs refer to 'yantok' as a piece of wood?) Thank you. Re: Panyo techniques Kim: I am aware of the technique of tying a couple of pesos to the end of a 'Panyo'(hankerchief) as an improvised weapon, however, I have heard that advanced kali practicioners employ locking techniques (Trancada) with the Panyo and that sometimes they also use this piece of clothing as a defense against a knife wielding assailant. Are there schools/styles specializing in this? Thank you. Kali! Kenjo __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! I know a few instructors in Boston - my family is up there, so I keep a watch out for people to work out with. Here are the ones that come to mind (standard disclaimers about a bad memory apply): - - Jack Bernard is a Pekiti guy who has been doing Pekiti for quite a few years. He's very knowledgable and very enthusiastic about the Filipino arts. His number can be found on Tuhon Bill's website. - - One of the guys who works out with Jack is a guy named Wes (whose last name escapes me). He does a variety of arts, including Silat (Uncle Bill lineage) and Serrada, if my memory serves me correctly. He's a very knowledgable guy. Both Jack and Wes are in North Boston (Arlington area). - - I just met a Doce Pares fellow named Jason Silverman who works out in South Weymouth. He's a very nice guy and, from our conversations, seems to be a good instructor. His website is at www.eemaworld.com. - - I've communicated with a guy named Arthur Sennott. Unless something's changed, he's in the North Boston area on Tuesdays. For the life of me, I cannot remember what style he teaches, but he's very approachable at asennott@concentric.net. I'm sorry if I've left anyone out. These are only the people I have communicated with directly. Drop me a line sometime and we'll get together. The last email address I have for you is the Nick Black one. Give my regards to Greg. Andy ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! It had an article about the International Performance Institute in Florida (Attack!Explode! by Carl Hoffman). I was expecting the usual 'curring edge' training routines (they did have things like Plyometrics and Core strengthening exercises such as doing bench presses on an exercise ball), but this had a little more. The article said that the Institute concentrates on athletic movement and coordination rather than just pure strength. The article mentioned muscle strength imbalances, flexibility imbalances, efficient forward and sideward acceleration and direction change, to name a few. It mentions agility training with specifics on how to hold the foot, the leg action when accelerating, the angle of the pelvis, etc. It seemed the whole approach was very detailed and well thought out, but the article was sketchy on those details. I look for sports science books when I'm at the book store, but barring the ones directed at treating injury, I haven't run across any books on, in the articles terms, 'athletic movement and coordination'. With all the exercise fanatics and experts we have on this list, does anyone have any leads?
