Does he ever do seminars that are based on his FMA experience? Master Leo Fong will teach trapping techniques and pressure point knockouts, and if you mention it to him he will most likely add in FMA and at the Sept 16th Ken Smith will teach Modern Arnis. statement from last digest: The Kuntaw that I know before I learned about Carlito Lanada Kuntaw is a soft style like Kung-Fu, and the step is closer to a Chinese Martial Arts. Seem to me when I first seen the Kuntaw with Carlito back on 1983, is a composed of Karate block and footwork and stances. When Lanada first brought Kuntaw to Olangapo he called it Kuntaw Kung Fu and it was as his father taught him. Then he changed the name to Maharlika Kuntaw, When martial Law came about he changed the name to Kuntaw ng Pilipinas to conform with Marcos thought of promoting everything Philippines. Around 1979 [would have to look at my papers for exact date] Lanada brought about the International Kuntaw Federation. Lanada added the hard karate techniques in the early to mid 70's of Shoto Kan and Shoto Ryu, so to his way of thinking adding more versatility to the style. this was brought in by a couple of his senior students named Bosco and Ortiz which were high ranking students in those arts. Though some forms look like Shoto Kan or Shoto Ryu, the philosophy and timing of Kuntaw is ingrained into the form. Now Kuntaw use to be spelled Kuntao, but the 'ao' was changed to 'aw' by his grandfather when he came to Luzon island from Mindano when the Spanish opened up Manila harbor. since coming to the United States Lanada will not admit to the changing or the 'ao' to 'aw', for I guess he wishes to be only recognized for Kuntaw. [the 'aw'] Also just for info Kuntaw is Kun [Kunsigrado] taw [Hataw] Sacred Strike. When the Maharlika was used then it was thought of as Buss Smith has said for the meaning. Just my 2 cents. Featuring Alain Burrese, this Paladin Press production offers a smorgasbord of impressive techniques that are fully explained. It progresses smoothly and logically from simple locks to takedowns to throws, and Burrese's narrative is simple, clear and concise. This is one of the few hapkido instructional tapes that I have found worth watching and definitely worth owning - regardless of your level. The 80-minute tape lists for $39.95. I am looking for eskrima contacts to work out with in the Denver area (schools or individuals). I will be in that area several times in the next year. I'll be there this coming Tuesday and Wednesday for starters, so a quick reply would be greatly appreciated. Go ahead and e-mail me privately, but please put something in the subject line to alert me that it is related to this topic, otherwise I might delete you. I am a bit virus-shy when it comes to opening unrecognized senders. Thanks in advance. Mabuhay ang eskrima! K. Strasburger __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
