Granted, I know very little of the history surrounding many of the great eskrimadores in history, but it is also my own responsiblity to do my research and studying. As far as his statement of ".... The fact or fiction of them does not contribute to my personal growth in the martial arts or even as person in general..." This is where my personal opionion comes in. I personally like to study the history behind some of the great practioners and read and find out where, what, when and why. Anything I can get my hands on. I guess it personally inspires me to push myself and it gives me a goal to which I can shoot for. It also gives me a background from where the FMA sprang from, who were some of the great practioners, and where they are today. I feel that it definetly helps my personal growth as a practioner and as a person. But Mr. Harrell is right though, we all should be getting off our butts and be out there practicing and training rather than arguing about who's who in the FMA world. Granted, it a good thing to be educated about such things, yet everything has its balance. "(I wish we could find a term other than "race" to describe the very minor differences between humans. We don't speak of the "Great Dane race" or the "Chihuahua race" and yet the differences between different breeds of dogs are certainly much greater than the differences between different "races" of humans.)" Maybe we could start by trying to make this perfectly clear to everybody :-) Ever since I learned that biologically speaking, there is no such thing as a "race" of humans except for the human race, I've used the word "type" to describe what we see as sets of shared gene expressions. Types, tribes and ethnic groups. Ethnic group (ethnicity) may have little to do with genetics, determined moreso by shared culture (includes values, beliefs, lifestyle practices, etc.). H'mm ... "Pipples is pipples" says the Greek Chef in The Muppet Movie :-) The way I see it, values are the critical factor. Doesn't answer anything about biology/genetics though. What the hey. It is easier for critters to assume that other critters who like them share their values, then bond with them for common causes than to take the time to find out what really makes the other critters tick (values). Shared values are more important to the coherence and survival of a group of critters than shared phenotype. In other words, how someone looks does not determine whether they will d! o a crime to you, your family, community, etc. ... even if they look/sound/walk/talk just like you. My German father-in-law once told me of how his father "belonged to an organization" but yet he (father-in-law) and I (non-German:-) had good chats, walks and talks out-and-about ... his daughter and I were his favorite people. When he urged us to have children I was dumbstruck ... like, hey, that's from the heart. Values, baby, values ... that's where we must find our commonalities ... and it takes TIME and ENERGY. Problem is that it is too easy for lazy mind to ID another as "self" by outward "appearances" only. IMHO, there's bigger "self" to be found based on -truly- shared values. Human values are sociocultural thangs, not genetic/racial/etc. ;-) 'Nuff of my noise. Mitakuye Oyasin. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, visiting Malaysia in her first visit abroad since taking office, met Murad Ibrahim, chief of staff of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, after the pact was signed. The agreement leaves just one Muslim group still fighting for independence from the largely Roman Catholic country: the extremist Abu Sayyaf, known for its kidnappings. The pact was signed by Murad and Jesus Dureza, the chief government negotiator. The deal filled in the details of a broader pact reached in June in Libya that brought the Islamic front to terms with Manila. The Moro National Liberation Front made peace in 1996 in exchange for a degree of autonomy in the southern Philippines. "The guidelines not only silence the guns for the peace of mind of the people," the negotiators said in a joint communiqué. "These also prohibit all public pronouncements that will tend to undermine the . . . credibility of both parties in waging peace." Representatives from the Islamic and National fronts--which signed a separate unity pact Tuesday--and the government negotiators met Arroyo and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad of Malaysia, whose country brokered the deal. ------------------------------ From: "David Eke" Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 03:05:46 +1000 Subject: eskrima: doubting dave is back After years on the list I decided to take a break for a while. The main reason was simply I was no longer learning about the things I originally joined for. Posts specifically about FMA or The Philippines in general seemed to be getting fewer, instead being replaced by unexcused advertising or self engrandisment of themselves their style or masters they were associated with. I'm glad I rejoined at the end of the Dr Gyi thread. Having been subjected to his "war stories" I was always sceptical (I also didn't think they were appropriate for an FMA list, but its a free country). I voiced my concerns, and it seems my point of view has (maybe) been vindicated . I did my own research, wrote a few emails contacted a friend still in the Army who had trained with Gurkhas (who in turn contacted them) and got nothing substantial either way. It all sounded real suspect but I had no firm proof except for my own personal bullshit meter. I read the web page and found the information confronting. If these accusations are false someone (even if he (Dr Gyi) doesn't want you to) needs to post evidence to the contary. It is truly the highest insult to a real vet to be called a fraud. However, I find it interesting that Dr Gyi who has regalled people with so many stories of his exploits is not prepared to defend himself. ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Wed, 08 Aug 2001 16:46:37 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #354 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
