First off, the people attending were seemed a great mix of personalities, styles, training and goals. Everyone at the camp, from instructors to the people training, put in some long hours working on a wide variety of material. Tuhon Chris Sayoc provided a wonderful exposure to Sayoc Kali, with, what I think most there would agree, was an incredible display of knife work. Grandmaster Estalilla, with Kaboroan Eskrima, also provided a great background on the art and some excellent training. Dr Gyi, whatever your feelings on any other part of his life, continues to amaze me with his knowledge and flexibility. Rico Chiaparelli took his grappling experience and gave us all ways to apply it in a stick fight. Roger Machado provided some of the better stretching excercises I've seen. Guro Crafty provided a great intro to the DBMAA material and how it all tied together. And,I like to think the Krabi-Krabong went well. Quite a few fought Sunday and I was impressed. The fighting was inside, much more cramped and tight than out in the park. Adjustments were made for limited range and all seemed to have a great time. I hope that everyone who attended had as great a time as I did, I feel I came away with enough material to keep me thinking and working for quite awhile. I'm looking forward to the next one Arlan ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Thu, 9 Aug 2001 15:30:58 +0100 Subject: eskrima: skippy Funny that the first post I receive on my return to the list includes this David. I had always wondered why you seem to be so quick to attack so many. I seem to remember you having pops at someone elses reputation as well. I'd be more interested in hearing on your positive contributions to the worldwide martial arts community rather than the excuse of bitching about someone. I'm sure you have done something that could earn you more credibility than simply running people down. I saw a fellow at the ticket counter in the airport with a set of chucks in his back pocket. They were clear acrylic. Since I had never seen a pair like that, I asked to look at them. He told me he studied kung fu in Japan.??? At that time I doubted that there were many kungfu studios in Japan. About 10 years later, going to Chicago, I carried on the plane a set of kali sticks in a pool cue bag. When they went through the scanner, I heard a security guard comment, "its a pool cue". I was not about to try and educate him about eskrima/kalia etc. Anyway... no body else had a clue what the chucks were. This was also in the early days of airport security. Likewise, no body knew what eskrima sticks were.
