Im sure you have said so before. Mik: Lowering the body onto the support leg makes a big difference in all low line kicks. I always work on a 6 foot bag. Sticks bounce off the low end (it's like concrete mon). If I kick it wrong, my instep or shin hurt like H. All I have to do to ensure that the impact will be dispersed is to always settle down on the support leg. Important to remember when fatiguing too, i.e., good technique always. The guy is pretty awesome, seen him in action while in San Diego, CA. Recommend if you go to San Diego you check him out. He is a pretty nice individual to talk to. http://Arniskido.tripod.com ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 16:06:55 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Indigenous British Post David, firstly the term skippy has never been derogatory in my small circle of Australian acquaintances but is indicative of the type of humour that if this were the spoken word you'd have picked up on. I felt my point would stand on its own without using abuse and to me that skippy was an adoring kangaroo on tv all those years ago. I can remember a lot of your posts on the "INDIGENOUS Filipino Martial Arts" and there was a lot of interesting information there. However what we see ourselves as and what others see ourselves as may differ from time to time and I - for one - find a lot of your posts tiresomely repetitive in attacking other people. I again note your wording of indigenous and recognise that you feel strongly about it. It annoyed me before and I left the list for a while and your behavior at that time was contributory to my decision but not the only reason. I am not advocating that you should not challenge things but to go on ringing the bell after you have made your points really irks me and as a community of 'adults' we can say that to each other. You chose your first post back to again attack someone even though you made that point before. It automatically reminded me of your attacks on another martial artist that I hold in high regard (but whom I see as human). I associate your name as some one who does have a chip on his shoulder and I think its fair for me to point that out in the hope that you can see that your approach might just be losing the point you are trying to make. But that's my opinion and take it or leave it. From: "David Eke" All you need is go back over the list and see the number of positive posts I have made. Try a keyword search on Balintawak. If they are negative I'm generally referring to what others have said. Also a common thread in many of my posts is a defense of the INDIGENOUS Filipino Martial Arts. BTY "skippy" is a derogatory term for an Australian, sort of like "wog" or "gook" (but then I guess you know that) One of the things which has remained constant about the list (thanks Ray) is the opportunity to express an opinion freely which is contrary to others. As to my post I stand by it, go through the last ten digests and count the number of posts that are directly related to the FMA taking out ads for seminars, not very many. - ------------------------------ Patrick M Davies ------------------------------ From: "Martin Diggins" Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 16:00:48 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Definition of a pacifist I came across the following interesting definition of a pacifist on the AikidoJournal.com website: "A pacifist is not really a pacifist if he is unable to make a choice between violence and non-violence. A true pacifist is able to kill or maim in the blink of an eye, but at the moment of impending destruction of the enemy he chooses non-violence." - Yukiyoshi Takamura. Regards, Martin ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 9:12:18 PDT Subject: eskrima: Indonesia - Travel Warning Forwarded message: Indonesia - Travel Warning August 10, 2001 The Department of State urges American citizens to defer nonessential travel to Indonesia and all travel to Aceh, Maluku, Papua, West Timor, Central and West Kalimantan (Borneo) and Central Sulawesi. Those who must travel to Indonesia, or who are resident there, should exercise extreme caution. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta has received information that indicates extremist elements may be planning to target U.S. interests in Indonesia, particularly U.S. Government facilities, and could also extend to U.S. tourists and tour groups. In addition, social unrest and violence can erupt with little forewarning anywhere in the country. Bombings of religious, political and business targets have occurred throughout the country. In light of this threat to U.S. interests, all American citizens in Indonesia, including tourists and hotel guests, should take precautions to ensure their safety. American citizens are urged to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to reduce their vulnerability. Americans in Indonesia should maintain a low profile, vary routes and times for all required travel, and treat mail and packages from unfamiliar sources with suspicion. Due to the continuing threat of serious violence, all travel should be avoided to the regions of Aceh, Maluku, West Timor, Central and West Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi. Further, all travel by U.S. and other foreign government officials to Aceh, Papua and the Moluccas (provinces of North Maluku and Maluku) has been restricted by the Indonesian government because of security concerns. Private Americans should adhere to these same restrictions. A massive bombing campaign struck churches throughout Indonesia on Christmas Eve 2000, leaving at least 16 dead and over one hundred injured. Bombings occurred in the cities of Medan, Pekanbaru, Batam, Bandung, Sukabumi, Bekasi, Jakarta, Mojokerto, Surabaya and Mataram. Bombings have also occurred over the past year at Indonesian government buildings, foreign diplomatic facilities and business and financial centers, including the Jakarta Stock Exchange. More explosive devices have been discovered in Jakarta since Christmas and there are indications that the bombings may continue. On occasion, the U.S. mission in Indonesia may have to suspend services to the public or close because of security concerns. In those situations, the Embassy will continue to be available by telephone to offer emergency services to American citizens. Some foreign travelers in troubled areas of Indonesia have been subject to arbitrary arrest, detention and deportation and, on at least one occasion, false accusations of espionage. In November 2000 in the central Java city of Solo, groups opposed to U.S. policy undertook or threatened "sweeps," trying to identify American citizens and order them to depart the country. There also have been a number of acts of intimidation and violence directed at American companies and U.S. diplomatic facilities. Indonesian security officials have sometimes been unwilling or unable to respond. The Abu Sayyaf terrorist group has been active throughout the islands in the extreme southwest Philippines, near Indonesia, and have kidnapped American citizens in the Philippines. American citizens traveling to the border regions in Northern Kalimantan and North Sulawesi, in particular the smaller islands closer to the Philippines, are urged to review their security procedures. American citizens resident or traveling in Indonesia are advised to exercise caution at all times, be alert to suspicious or unclaimed packages, vary times and routes and other aspects of personal daily routine and keep a low profile. Updated information on travel and security in Indonesia may be obtained from the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta by calling tel. (62)(21) 3435-9000, or the Consulate General in Surabaya by calling tel. (62)(31) 567-2287/8. For further information, U.S. citizens planning to visit or reside in Indonesia are advised to consult the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Indonesia. The Consular Information Sheet is available at any U.S. embassy or consulate abroad and through the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet home page at http://travel.state.gov. This Travel Warning replaces the June 27, 2001 Travel Warning for Indonesia to advise U.S. citizens of a threat to U.S. interests from extremist elements. Information concerning East Timor is contained in a separate Public Announcement. ------------------------------ From: "tim hartman" Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 18:54:43 Subject: eskrima: JK Kenpo camp Greetings, I just got back from JK Kenpo's 2nd annual Kenpo camp, I had a great time! The camp topics were based on Parker's Kenpo. The instructors were Huk Planas 9th, Frank Trejo 9th, myself (Tim Hartman 6th Modern Arnis), Mike Cappi 4th, and Ed Parker Jr. I was honored to be able to represent Modern Arnis at this event. In addition to the training we also enjoyed the family atmosphere of camping under the stars, camp fires and a horse shoe tournament. Mr. Planas and Mr. Trejo pulled double duty by teaching people how to use bullwhips when they were off the mats, needless to say I had the opportunity to crack myself a couple times before I got it right. In addition to all of that we were honored by a visit of two of Parker Kenpo's top player, Doreen Cogliandro 8th & Dian Tanaka 6th. They arrived on Sunday after teaching at a women's camp in Maryland. These women can Rock! Not based on standards for there gender, but based on just being martial artist. I would not look forward to the beating I could get from the when they are in the zone. All in all we all had a greet time! I recommend going to next years event.
