I'd like to know how they hold up in full contact sparring and if they're worth buying. Thanks, Ken" I like the Action Flex's a lot (I get 31 inchers) and have noticed that when people are training with me that they get noticed ("Hey, these are cool, where did you get them- that sort of thing) but when I had some sent to Dr. Gyi he reported back that they did not survive the full contact sparring. I have not used them for that, but for light sparring, hitting during stickgrappling etc I think they are very good. Woof, Crafty ------------------------------ From: "William T. I trained in Shorin-ryu and judo at The Philippine Combat Karate and Judo (PHICKAJU), a large commercial school in Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila, under GM Rannie Henson and Master Morris Dolores. One of my fondest memories was belt testing and receiving my certificate from The Siete Pares Association, a confederation of several Shorin-ryu schools of which PHICKAJU was a member. I had to do forms and spar (single and multiple) with numerous other candidates from the other Shorin-ryu schools, and the competition was very spirited and heated at times. I have no idea whether these organizations survive to this day; at least, my ID's and certificates from these organizations survive in my archives. GM Latino Gonzales is acknowledged to be the father of shorin-ryu in the Philippines, and thanks mostly to his efforts, shorin-ryu was the predominant commercial karate style and the Commando Karate Club the premier dojo during the 60's and 70's. I had several friends who trained there. I believe GM Latino Gonzales passed away here in the States just a few years ago. Actor Roberto Gonzales was another action star in the same genre and time frame as Tony Ferrer, Jess Lapid and Alberto Alonzo. If I remember correctly, the latter two actors died in gunfights at the height of their popularity (at the hands of adversaries, in real life). Since it appears that GM Latino Gonzales lived here in the States for a while, it is entirely possible he was able to set up an organization here in the States. Let's hope a member steps up to provide details. Jay and all the Philippine Commando Karate practitioners (Shorin-ryu) If I can get some more input to the topic as far as names of individuals who were at the Manila schools, I can ask Master Shiroma about the training and history. As I said in an earlier posting,I live about 3 miles from Master Shiroma's dojo and when I went to talk to him concerning this topic, he was surprised.. As we talked, he went into his office and brought out some pictures of the school and practitioners there... It was almost like old home week, seeing Karateka who practiced in the Philippines.. I was a member of the Angeles City Comjuka Kempo association which is still maintained by GM Rafael Reston.. He trained with his father and some of the US Army in Manila prior to the second war.. GM Reston is originally from Batangas province and has studied in Okinawa and Japan in Goju-ryu and various other systems when he was assigned to the US Army.. When I visited the Philippines in June 2000, I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with him and talked about some of the practitioners in our association... BTW: I have been a member of GM Reston's Comjuka system since the mid 70's and he sat in on my Instructor ranking test in Kuntaw also... We had a tight group of practitioners between the Kuntaw and Comjuka associations.. My instructor was also trained by GM Reston in Comjuka also.. So we had the best of both worlds... I was fortunate to receive a typewritten manuscript from GM Reston outlining his training in the Japanese arts and in Sinko Tiros Balintawak, which by the way was the first system of arnis I trained in back when I was a young whippersnapper . Comjuka and the Philippine Commando Karate systems are not well known outside of the Philippines. During the time I have been in Comjuka and Kuntaw, I have only met 3 other people who knew of these systems..I have made contact with another Comjuka Karate stylist who lives in the states and other than that, I have only seen/met two others... As I stated earlier, I can talk to Master Shiroma and see if he is willing to talk a little more about this club and training...
