Many times to think of, as the new times grow and times of old go into our distant memory, the new generation have the folks from old to thank for a turbulent but educational past. Certainly it is good to keep up the history simply for its great value. Indonesia and Philippines a family closely related. Magellan was accompanied by many of Humabon's warriors, but he ordered them not to join in the fight, but watch how Europeans fight. More arrogance? But it should be safe to assume that Magellan was an experienced, if not battle-hardened, field commander. How could he make such a fatal miscalculation? One historian has suggested that rain had soaked the Europeans' muskets, rendering them useless. Did this level the playing field, or tip it in favor of the natives, who were armed with bows and arrows and lances, in addition to their fearsome blades? Pigafetta, the voyager's historian, describes Magellan's warrior death. Magellan, already seriously wounded by arrows, was set upon in shallow waters by several natives with lances and swords. Thus, wrote Pigafetta, did their leader, their "soul and mirror," die. Jay de Leon ------------------------------ From: "jose saguisabal" Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 12:12:48 -0700 Subject: eskrima: Clarkfield ABand Mt Pinatubo: My theory FACT: The US needed Clark and Subic bases for their geographical strategic advantage they gave the US over our then-arch enemy: the USSR. Former President Aquino, who remembered the evil power-disguised-as-protector-of-all-that-is-good, the US military that watched Marcos overrun the Philippines (since the US gov't got what she wanted already), was tired of seeing another power dominate her country's politics. So she refused to renew the lease on the two military bases. The US is not above destroying what it cannot have to keep others from enjoying it. My theory: US forces, which are known to sabatoge and interfere with the forces of nature (political and otherwise), detonated bombs within the crater of Mount Pinatubo, hoping no one could benefit from the base's presence. We knew the greed of Pilipino politicians would destroy the economy, and the bases would be sold to the highest bidder. We also knew that only the US gov't could/would come up with the billions of dollars to repair the base should the Filipinos decide to sell again. Evidence: 1.Filipino experts who claim that Mt. Pinatubo could've only erupted by unnatural causes (the center of the crater was too thick for erosion to be the cause)--have all been offered jobs working for the US Navy and Weather Service, despite American experts dismissing this claim as "ridiculous". 2. Congress held back foreign aid money for education and other purposes to the Philippines after our military left the PI. Nearly ten years later, guess who is paying for the rebuilding of Clark and the runway? Last summer (2000) our military began training exercises at Clark once again. If you check the bank accounts of local politicians, I'm willing to bet you'll find huge deposits of "grease money" from unnamed sources. Okay, too much "Conspiracy Theory"? I don't think so. But I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss my theory as garbage. But, back to FMA....anybody going to Maurice Gatdula's Battle/Best of Sacramento tournament?
