Various substances are absorbed by specific regions of the small intestine ... and nowhere else. So, if something is advertised as sustained release, this means that some of it may remain undissolved and/or unabsorbed as it's moved through the small intestine and into the large ... from which they will be excreted. If you were to look at some abdominal/pelvic X-Rays you might see a lot of undissolved/sustained release pills that just go down the river, maybe to enrich the lives of some fish or bottom feeders, eh?:-) Essentially equals money gone down the river! __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Hudgins' Top 10 Instructors in the US OK, I will play G. Hudgins' game, live dangerously, and come up with my list of the top instructors in the US. I assume that the list means FMA instructors, currently in the US, who approach the skill, knowledge, influence and stature of GMs R. Presas and M. Inay. I will modify the rules, not restrict it to 10, and divide the list into two--senior and junior. The gentlemen in the senior list are either founders, inheritors or representatives of FMA systems, and in addition to their stature as FMA icons, enjoy "emeritus" status--their gray hair. The junior list represents the "second generation" masters - hopefully, they will still be around teaching for a long time. The lists are IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER. Senior 1. Richard Bustillo - So. California 2. Leo Giron - No. California 3. Amante "Mat" Marinas - NY 4. Ben Largusa - in semi-retirement in Hawaii? 5. Ernesto Presas - No. California 6. Guillermo "Bobby" Taboada - S. Carolina? 7. Dan Inosanto - So California 8. Cacoy Canete - No. California 9. Tom Bolden - NY 10. Elmer Ybanez - senior student of GM Ben Lema/Lightning Scientific Arnis, presumably somewhere in the US? 11. Herminio Binas - in retirement in Philadelphia? 12. Onofre Escorpizo - in retirement in Philadelphia? 13. Ramiro Estallila - So. California 14. Rene Latosa - California? 15. Chris Sayoc - NY Junior 1. Narrie Babao - San Diego 2. Abon Baet - Florida 3. Jason Inay - No. California 4 Raffy Pambuan - Florida 5. Alfredo Bandalan, Sr. - No. California 6. Bill McGrath - NY 7. Kelly Worden - Washington State? 8. Burton Richardson - Hawaii? 9. Paul Vunak - So. California 10. The Dog Brothers founders, Marc Denny et al - So. California Additional comments : (1) Since I live in the West Coast, my lists are top-heavy with West Coast practitioners. I know there there is a slew of GM's in Hawaii. So, somebody please help on this score. (2) Obviously, if somebody like Leo Gaje returns to the US, or some renown GM immigrates to the US, their names would be included in the list. (3) Please note, I came up with this list from the top of my head, with fading memory, but with a lot of respect and admiration from the heart. Please feel free to correct or supply additional info. If you disagree with some of the "nominees," please take it in the spirit given, to give honor and recognition where due, not to slight anybody. But, if I were going to toss in my 2 cents worth here, in no particular order, I would have to say Dan Inosanto, followed by Jimmy Tacosa, Tony Diego, any of the Canetes, Tom Bisio (this man gets a BIG vote from me, simply incredible martial artist), Bobby Taboada, Leo Gaje and the Tortal clan, Billy McGrath, Richard Bustillo, Dentoy Revillar, Narrie Babao, Greg Lontanyao, Ben Largusa, Leo Giron and Tony Somera, all of the Dog Bros., and Sam Tendencia. My apologies to anyone I left out, no disrespect intended, just one heck of a long list. A co-worker has a four year old son who was recently diagnosed with a mild form of cerebral palsy. One symptom he has, is a shorter than usual achilles tendon, so he usually walks up on his toes. Their physiotherapist is working to stretch the tendon, but suggested they enroll the child in a Kenpo class to help the stretch. Is this the best choice of an art to accomplish the stretching? My JKD/FMA instructor doesn't offer any thing for his age group, so that is not an option. I thought that TKD would be a better option than kenpo for the little fella, as TKD seem to put more emphasis on kicking and stretching. I do not know Kenpo or TKD at all, so that's why I am looking for some input from any list members an his behalf. My background is limited to Chito-ryu, Jujitsu and wrestling, but I believe those arts might not be the best option, which is ultimately to stretch the achilles. I am not saying anything against Kenpo, just that another art may be a better choice for his situation. (We are also hampered by a lack of options with respect to different Martial Arts being offered here in Atlantic Canada, but any input is welcomed.) ------------------------------ From: "sgt evans" Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2001 08:46:52 -0400 Subject: eskrima: great seminar Master Terry; thanks for a great seminar Monday. In reply to G. Hudgins' question of the top Eskrima instructors, I recommend Grandmaster Cacoy Canete of Doce Pares. I have been training Doce Pares for several years now, & his approach to combat is exceptional. For an all-around "taste" of styles, Dan Inosanto is great. Leo Girion (Bahala Na) & Greg Lontoyao (Villabrille/Largusa) are also excellent. Narrie Babao (Baston Batangas) I have only seen once, and that was ten years ago, but his flow left a lasting impression on me. I agree with the knowledge being lost, just in the last five years we have seen Edgar Sulite, Herman Suwada (Pentjak Silat Mande Muda) & Florendo Visitacion pass. Guro France has a lot of knowledge to share and is worthy of the position he holds in the organization. I also met and talk with the Guros from the other different FMA systems and everyone was both open and cordial in nature. I was humbled by the generosity of the IPMAF group and flattered by the attention given to me by Grandmasters Presas, Taboada and Ama Guro Pambuan. Reflecting on all this reminds me of an experience I had over 25 years ago at a major martial arts event when I asked legendary Shotokan Master George Cofield for his autograph on my program. Right in front of my face he told one of his students to sign it for him.The man was full of himself! If our leaders in the FMA's can be considerate and courteous to others then we owe it to them follow their example. If we could write with the same regard as would have if we were talking in person then there would be no flames, no wars and no bashing. As FMArtists we should support other systems than our own. Attend other system seminars as we would our own (if you can afford it!). And most of all regardless of what FMA system it is speak highly of it as if it was your own. Time to get off my soapbox. Respectfully, Al Sardinas Student of Garimot System of Arnis BTW, one incentive to attend any seminar that features GM Presas is that he always has for sell (at reasonable prices), a multitude of great weapons, books and other items from the Philippines. I would like to preface my short list with the following comment: The following people are men that I have studied with in camps and seminars. I do not want to use the word "great", I would prefer to say that these instructors are highly skilled masters whom I would recommend to others and with who I will be studying again over the course of the next 12 to 18 months as my schedule and money allow. 1. Punong Guro Eddie Lastra - Lastra-Sayas Arnis - San Francisco Largo Mano/ Cinco Teros striking style. A very active system with strong footwork and an excellent espada y daga component. 2. Gat Puno Abon Baet - Garimot Arnis: A Largo Mano style with several striking patterns: cinco teros, seite teros and neuve teros, plus a grappling style, Harimaw Buno which includes the use of the knife and short rope. Miami, FL. 3. Punong Guro Tom Bolden, Pancipanci Eskrima, a blended style with definate Moro-Moro influences. A Largo to Medio range style and very strong ephasis placed on evasion & mobility. When closing to corto range the use of the "alive or off hand" is emphasised. This style is supplamented by the PG Bolden's training in CHA-3 Kenpo and Yang Tai Chi. Very dynamic. Poughkeepsie, NY. 4. Master Bram Frank, Modern Arnis. A strong emphisis placed on the translation of the blade to empty hand and stick. His understanding of the conceptual extension of the drills taught by the late Professor Presas, is right up there with the higher ranking people claiming endorsements. 5. Master Roberto Torres, Kalasag Kun Tao and Arnis. Very strong teachering creditinal. His use of the stick when combined with is knowledge of joint locking and grappling adds an entirely new dimension to the Filipino-Indonesian blend that seems to becoming popular currently. He has an excellent set of videos on the market, through Unique Publications. New York City. 6. Dr. Jerome Barber, Modern Arnis and Pancipanci Eskrima. In addition to being a knowledgable martial artist, he is also a professional educator. He uses several cinco teros and nueve teros strikinng styles and mobility drills that cover the largo, medio and corto ranges effectively. He has a strong background in Tracy Kenpo, that adds to his concepts of self defense. Buffalo, NY. 7. GM Bobby Taboada, Balintawak Eskrima. A classmate of Remy Presas, under the late GGM Bacon. Excellent teacher and practioner of the art. Fast powerful and very precise. Nothing fancy, very direct and practical art. He is teaching group lessons/ seminars and the fine tining occurs in private lessons. raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com, wrote: > Subject: Re: eskrima: Who are top 10 instructors in U.S. > > One great that both the above held in VERY hgh regard is GM Cacoy > Canete. I would not hesitate to attend a second seminar. One other person that I would like to study with in GM Ben Lima. Someone else will have to tell us more about this gentleman, however, from what I have seen in a video tape, I would certinly make every efffort to attend one of his seminars. That is my short list. Janich Video. ($5.00 P&H charge added to orders) If you own or carry a tactical folding knife, this video will teach you skills to effectively use it. Michael Janich is no stranger to the blade, having shared his knowledge in books, articles, videos and seminars for many years now. In this presentation, Janich shares his expertise in a clear and practical manner. Janich organized this tape in a logical order, starting with the criteria for a tactical folder, moving to one handed opening techniques, carry and draw methods, grips, and then his system of knife fighting based on Filipino knife fighting principles. The section on opening tactical folders is a must for those who carry and use these blades. Janich covers opening a variety of styles with different opening devices. He includes thumb openings, blade grip handle swing openings, ring finger opening for reverse grip or ice pick grip handling and inertia openings that don't rely on the opening devices such as the thumb peg or Spiderco hole. I also liked that Janich pointed out that a tactical folder can also be carried open in a sheath during the carry and draw portion of the video. The latter half of the tape focuses on Janich's system of knife fighting, and is applicable to any blades, not just the tactical folder. It's broken down into the fundamentals of his system, the five angles, pass, follow and meet. He covers de-fanging the snake as well as using your live hand. He ends with the explanation and demonstration of several flow drills and their benefits. His instruction is clear and concise, and the viewer should have no trouble learning and practicing these drills with a training partner by following along with the tape. The viewer should also take note of the purpose of the drills, something I'm glad Janich points out. By studying this tape and practicing what Janich teaches, a person will have a very good foundation on the fundamentals of tactical folder use, and in basic Filipino knife tactics in general. From here, I hope to see Janich continue this instruction by teaching and demonstrating more on how to deploy the tactical folder under various circumstances as you see him do in a couple of the "action" sequences. He has an advanced tactical folder tape coming out later this year, and my advice is to get this tape now, study it, and prepare to learn from the advanced tape when it's released. I know I will!
