Y'know it was Booker Washington who said, "I will not let a man narrow and degrade my soul by letting me hate him". On the news I hear a lot of hate, and I see the anger from everybody. In addition to praying for the victims, could we all also make one for true peace and understanding. As all affected human beings, American or not, love is the only truth that transcends all things. As I always say, "Hell is not only metaphysical, but also mental". Every minute we spend angry, we lose 60 precious seconds of our own peace and happiness. As Lao Tzu said, "Respond intelligently to unintelligent treatment." - -Pray that the right thing will be done, and that everyone maintain the integrity of a true human soul. - -Your "Dog Brother" is in my prayers to Crafty. Assalamu Alai Kum (Peace be with you all), Erwin Legaspi "Intellect and intelligence do not go together. Intelligence is obtained only when the heart and mind reach an agreement." - Jiddu Krishnamurti "I saw my Lord with the eye of my heart I saw: "Who are You?" He said: "You!" But for You, "where" cannot have a place And there is no "where" when it concerns You. The mind has no image of your existence in time Which would permit the mind to know where you are. You are the one who encompasses every "where" Up to the point of no-where So where are You?" - -Sufi Muslim mystic Al-Hallaj (858-922 A.D.) ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 09:08:03 +0100 Subject: eskrima: plan to rebuild the World Trade Centers From: "Cory Smith" First, I personally think that we should (as a country) plan to rebuild the World Trade Centers as quickly as possible (whatever the cost) to tell the rest of the world that we stand together as a country ... Fair point but the design was stupid in the first place. Those firefighters climbed with full kit all those floors. Any design should take into account the safety of the people that are in any building. Listening to one survivor who made it from the 57th floor. It was when they reached the 20th floor that the firefighters past them and he said by then they were looking exhausted. While my heart goes out to all those caught up in the disaster I feel very strongley for those who went in there to help people and to certain death. We should not be foolish to encourage that to happen again. Patrick M Davies AMAG ------------------------------ From: Patrick Davies Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 11:40:54 +0100 Subject: eskrima: re: Sundry thoughts From: "Marc Denny" 1) Patrick's thoughts: Although I agree that the US often puts its nose where it ought not too, (see my PS below and a point worthy of considerable reflection) I confess I find many of his comments silly-for example blaming the US for Brazil's policies of replacing jungle with cattle ranches. You misunderstand me and I accept that that could be down to poor writing. It is the way that the US is perceived in the world is different from the way you perceive yourselves. Perception may not have anything to do with facts. Many ills in the world have been credited to certain decisions that were influenced by wealthy corporations that are institutionalized in the US. These icons are seen as crass and destroy the cultures in which they go into and are held to be icons of the US. The fast food throw away society is seen as a plague by many rather than the freedom and civilization its promoted as. I am trying to say that the way you have acted before has not necessarily been in your best interest and only by pointing this out I hope you stop making the same mistake and avoid fuelling the opportunity for idiots to do this again! From: Luis Pellicer III With all due respect, whether THEY consider it payback or not is irrelevant. They could be happy for all I care, and think that they're going to heaven by dying a martyrs death. As long as they're dead. ........People can think what they want, but personally I like to take care of my own. I fully understand but ask you to take a wider look and make sure that the action taken is not make up to hide the spots but the real effective stuff that stops this hideous act from ever happening again. US retaliation in the past in Sudan, Afghanistan and elsewhere has only served to encourage more anti US feeling and give these maniacs a platform to stand on. there is the opportunity right now that with the world revulsion to this act that we can really do something that stops this from escalating and in fact puts a stop to it. If we are to stop this atrocity from repeating itself - speaking as someone who has been blighted by terrorism in my own country - then we have to do it in a proper way. Next time you see a Noraid can going around a bar looking for donations take a thought that that money is funding terrorist activities in the UK and make your stand against terrorism. The IRA bombings in the UK have been funded by people in the US being duped into some romantic idea. One mans struggle against tyranny is another mans terrorism but when people are the victims we should say no. Mass bombing of Afghanistan therefore isnt the answer as it hasn't been in Bahgdad. The martial arts connection is how best to look after ourselves without attracting the attacks to happen again. Peace be with you. Patrick M Davies ------------------------------ From: Joe Marszalek Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 04:05:30 -0700 (PDT) Subject: eskrima: Re: Courage There was an eye witness in Somerset County that said they heard a large plane flying low so they got out of their truck to check (since that is extremely odd in their neck of the woods). They stated they saw the commerical plane smoking in the air and going down. Then heard an impact and more smoke in the distance as if it crashed. Two seconds later two planes flew by following it. They could not determine what kind of military plane the two where. We do have a small air force base out here just north west of downtown Pittsburgh. So the possibility of the eye witness being correct isn't far fetched. I work in Pittsburgh and live 17 miles east of it. Later in the day (1 or 2PM) I did have a military fighter fly over my house. For their information, in case they are not aware of it there has been a ban on all knives in the prison system for as long as I can remember. Yet, a home made knife or "shank" is the number 1 tool for most cons. I wonder what the outcome would have been had there been some of the people on this list on board with a pen knife? As usual, they will simply make sure that those that follow the rules will be disarmed. I find it incredulous that with the number of passengers only so few fought back. But for the most part society has been told for decades now by "experts" not to resist, not to fight back, you will simply make matters worse. Death is something that is inevitable. Like Jim Morrison said "Nobody gets out of here alive" So we are left with only two choices surrender your life or sell it. I prefer to make mine very very costly. One more thing that has puzzled me, since way back when the first hijacking started. Why don't they have much better and stronger doors on the cockpit, and why is it not SOP that at the first hint of anything unusual no one leaves or enters the cockpit? I realize that this is a non military situation, however had the crew in the cockpit locked down and stayed put countless lives might have been saved. I say might because of course that assumes these creeps didn't have a back up plan. also realize how difficult it would be to remain at your post when something like that is happening. Please understand this is not putting blame just, looking for answers. One belief is that retaliation only brings on more retalitation. Another belief is as follows: What does it take to stop a terrorist who is willing to give his life for his cause? What could make him think twice about his suicidal misssion? What if he knew that if he committed this act of terrorism that his group would be hunted down and eliminated? Besides his terrorist group, his mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, dog, cat, goat, camel, home, aunts, uncles, and everything he was connected to was wiped off the face of the earth, would that be enough to make him think twice? Is there some place in between these two positions? 000000000000000 My heart goes out to those that suffered loss. I only hope that our government makes the best possible choices in the actions it takes. Not only should we pray for the innocent lives lost, but pray that our leaders make the right choices. I make no judgement as to what the right choices are and do not want you to think that I am praying for mass destruction of the enemy. I do not know the answer. ========= One final thought, let us remember the three or more passengers on the one flight that fought back. Though they lost their lives and the lives of the other passengers, it is clear that they saved the lives of many on the ground. My guess is with cell phones and on board flight radios, that they knew what was going on and what would happen if they did not try to retake the ship. I would hope that should I, or any of you out there be found in a similar situation that we could make the right choice. I believe those people deserve the highest civil award possible.
