I dont use my bag that much but when I do I punch at about 50 - 100% power with footwork designed to assist with the power (shuffling in - Cabalero). I dont do a lot of combinations as the bag swings- just direct stuff and dont tape my hands- I dont punch the bottom of the bag either. Its just a standard leather canvas thing which weighs about 120 lbs, because of the noise it makes I have to grab it after hitting it to stop it from making a horrendous grinding noise. I dont mind that as I believe you need to exercise opposite poles of force if you can. However, I always warm my fists up first with isometric hand exercises, will usually do pushups on fists as well, then I will practise what I am going to do in the air before I approach the bag - I dont just go straight into bag hitting. Power needs to be focused through excellent form or the side-effects will cause damage. I also do the same with forearm and elbows with full power and with shuffling. I apply Arnis hand combinations to it by imagining the thing has arms and punch the bag as the body/head. I tend to kick the bottom of the thing with stomps only. I used to know this guy in High School who had previously broken his hand from fighting. He punched a friend of mine in the face at a party. My friend got a small bruise - you could'nt see it really - and this guy rebroke his hand. After that every time he swung someone his hand broke in the same area. If a student of mine kept rebreaking his hand I would advise that he spend a period of months religiously reconditioning it and working on having a fist like a rock before testing it on bagwork or otherwise. Even then due to the way bone remends that area will be at a higher risk of breaking. All the best, Steve. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2001 10:14:04 PDT Subject: eskrima: scam fyi... Forwarded message: The e-mailing below is part of a very elaborate scam. The book "British Qualifications", available from Amazon.com, and now in its 31st Edition, lists all approved professional, technical, and academic programs in the United Kingdom that lead to a government- approved certificate or college degree. The only government-approved program in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) is that conducted by the College of Higher Education of Martial Arts (CHEMA). CHEMA offers programs up through the master's-level. A research Ph.D. is then offered by matriculation with a well-known university. There are no other approved programs, period, end of sentence, end of paragraph. Anyone putting money into this program is just wasting their money. Of course there is a side benefit for anyone participating in this. They will probably get to meet a real live Special Agent of the FBI. When Scotland Yard finally acts on this scam - as it inevitably will - the computer record will lead to the United States. Scotland Yard will undoubtedly share this with the FBI. _________________________________________________ From: "worldcallcentre" Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2001 10:37:46 +0100 Subject: martial art opportunity This message is from the World Martial Arts Academy to inform you of a new martial arts opportunity that is about to be launched on a global scale. It involves martial art academic education programmes through distance learning and the British education system. This is a financial opportunity that will benefit martial artists everywhere. ------------------------------ From: "Philip Gelinas" Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2001 13:37:10 -0400 Subject: eskrima: RE: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #444/Tom Bisio Regarding Tom Bisio, I had the great pleasure of meeting Tom Bisio, and training with him consistently untill 1988 when he broke away from Grand Tuhon Gaje. He won the senior instructors division at the NARAPHIL championships in Cebu after only a couple of years training which made the instructor of his opponent declare that the "judges must have been drunk". I believe that this is also when he met Momoy Canete. Tom's quality of movement has always been lightyears ahead of his class contemporaries, as shown by his easy slide into high level internal training and teaching. I received my Lakan level from him in 1984 and would love to spend more time with him if cicumstances ever permited. Our children and general populous here and across America faced the Fight or Flight response to great danger. They had nowhere to run and no one to fight. We are now seeing the early signs and effects in this area of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in our children and or families. The negative effects of it being so close to them are present. Its not going to get better by itself and only worse without resources and ways to try and balance some of the negative effects now. Ms. J bows Deeply. The F.A.T.E. Organization " F.A.T.E."
