If you missed it you missed something. He will be going back to the Philippines in November but will be back in the U. S. next May for a month or so and then off for an extensive seminar tour in Europe. So if he does a seminar near you I highly suggest you do not miss it. I was formally given the title 5 years ago, and have never risen above it.... RE: "Can you tell us something about your style of Latigo y Daga? Are there any books, articles, videos, etc that attempt to describe it or teach it?" I got very sick and missed three months of work earlier this year, and thus missed both the scheduled video shoot and my book deadline. The delays in getting the video out are my own, and I did get an extension from Paladin press for the book titled "The Filipino Fighting Whip", which I am nearing completion on, and it should be in the stores by June of 2002 I believe. There are currently three instructors in the Latigo y Daga method and I will list them here in order of seniority: Mike Krivka in Baltimore, MD; Jeff Finder in Berkeley, Calif, and Ron Balicki in Redondo Beach, Calif. All these instructors have trained under me at some level for at least six years, and each has his own unique application of the core techniques of the Latigo y Daga system. Master Ron Lew (San Jose, CA) and Steve Kohn (Torrance CA) have also put in considerable time in this art and have much to offer any student. Ron Balicki, Steve Kohn and I have spent quite a bit of time with Anthony DeLongis who has his own whip method developed for stunt work, and I consider it the most refined training sytem I have seen. Much of what Anthony does is reflected in one fashion of another in my own material. I will have a website up in about two weeks at www.latigoydaga.com which should cover these questions in more detail I am going to close with an excerpt from the upcoming book to give the digest readers an idea of the Latigo y Daga system and its structure: Tom Meadows - -Floor Manager- ---------------------------------------- THE LATIGO Y DAGA TECHNICAL FOUNDATION The technical foundation for the whip techniques in the Latigo y Daga system text come from two different systems of the Filipino martial arts. The first is Inosanto-LaCoste Kali as taught by Guro Dan Inosanto. The second is the Doce Pares close range Eskrima system of Grandmaster Cacoy Canete, which is known as his Corto method. Guro Dan Inosanto trained with Bruce Lee for many years and is responsible for the integration of Filipino fighting techniques and martial concepts into Bruce Lee's fighting system. Guro Inosanto was initially introduced to his Eskrima instructors through his father, Sebastian Inosanto, and ultimately trained with over 26 men that we today would classify as masters of the Filipino martial arts of Eskrima, Arnis, and Kali. One of these men, John LaCoste, had an extensive training background of his own and had categorized his Kali training into twelve areas. These twelve areas are listed on the chart on the following page. If you examine section nine, the flexible weapons section of this chart, you can see that there are ten weapons that fit into this category. This text will focus on the use and application of three of the flexible weapons found in this section; the whip, the olisi-toyuk which are better known as the nunchaku, and the sting ray tail. Guro Inosanto has inherited some very unique applications of these weapons through his training with John LaCoste and others, and these applications will be reflected in the material covered here. THE WHIPS OF DOCE PARES ESKRIMA Several types of whips are found within the Doce Pares Eskrima system. The first type of whip is a 28 inch baton with an equal length of rope attached to one end and a short popper attached to the end of the rope. This is classified as a stock whip due to its handle length, and it can be used as a baton or as a whip, as well as a combination of both. The second type of Doce Pares whip is the braided manila rope whip as used by Grandmaster Momoy Canete. Momoy Canete was a rope maker and braided his own whips out of the rope he made. His whips were six to eight feet long and used a fifteen inch wooden handle. This design closely approximates a contemporary Australian bullwhip. Momoy used a unique attachment of the manila rope whip to its handle and this led him to develop some interesting attack angles that can only be duplicated with a whip of this design. These applications will be examined in detail in this text. THE LATIGO Y DAGA TRAINING METHOD The continuous technical evolution of the Filipino martial arts is the direct by product of the ongoing process of uncovery. In truth no one invents or discovers a new technique, but rather through training, or the process of exploration, finds movements or physical techniques that are new to them. More than likely some past martial artist found the same technique and it became lost through the attrition of time. It is this concept of uncovery and continuous development that is at the core of the Latigo y Daga whip training method. The techniques presented in this text are the result of forty-three years of whip training by the author, fourteen years of his research into the techniques of the Filipino martial arts , and the on-going process of uncovery. The Latigo Y Daga whip training method is the result of the author's extensive research and is the ideal vehicle to present Filipino whip techniques due to its underlying principles and training progression. The Latigo Y Daga method has two distinct principles: The first is that it is not designed to directly teach the whip, but rather to teach body mechanics that are the most suited to proper whip manipulation. The second principle is that since the goal is the development of a particular type of body mechanics, the foundation and corresponding technical progression becomes critical. The Latigo Y Daga training structure consists of specific training blocks that develop a particular group of body mechanics. This group of body mechanics becomes the foundation for the next block of training and techniques. Completion of the training in all the blocks of the Latigo Y Daga method will provide the student of the martial arts with a sound foundation in body mechanics as found in the Filipino arts, and the ability to apply these movements to combative applications of the whip. The purpose of this text is to us to document modern Filipino whip techniques in order to preserve them for future generations of Filipino martial artists. This will ensure that all practitioners of the whip arts will have a sound technical foundation to continue their own study of the flexible weapons of the Filipino martial arts. ------------------------------ From: Tom Meadows Date: Tue, 09 Oct 2001 10:01:10 -0700 Subject: eskrima: humor Osama Bin Laden phoned President George W. All other luggage must be checked. The FAA restrictions on carry-on baggage mirror the rules imposed on flights to and from Reagan National Airport when it reopened last week. THE FEDERAL AGENCY ALSO is telling passengers that they must be prepared to show a photo ID along with their boarding pass at the gate before they board the plane, another step first taken at National Airport. In addition, the carry-on bags may be searched again at the gate. Airline security remains at its highest level since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and the FAA on Monday again warned airports about security concerns following Sunday's attacks by U.S. and British forces on Afghanistan. The FAA did not ban curbside check-in, as it did during the Persian Gulf War. Some airlines and airports can offer the service if special security procedures are in place. The restrictions on carry-on luggage were recommended last week by a Transportation Department task force investigating ways to improve security. SEARCHES OF LAPTOPS, CELL PHONES Electronic devices brought aboard planes, such as laptops and cell phones, may be subject to additional screening, the FAA said. The FAA also issued a list of items that passengers may not carry on board a plane: Knives; any other cutting instruments such as straight razors, box cutters, metal scissors, ice picks and metal nail files; corkscrews; baseball and softball bats; golf clubs; pool cues; ski poles; and hockey sticks. Passengers may pack safety razors, tweezers, eyelash curlers and nail clippers in their carry-on luggage. They can bring umbrellas and walking canes on board, after they are inspected. Syringes also will be allowed with proof of medical need. ....
