I have never forgotten his reply: "Ah no, I just rely on my technique!" In mentioning departed eskrimadors leave us not forget Lucky Lucay Lucay and his son Ted, both of whom died last decade. Ted was a fine man with a great heart, and made learning as much fun as it could possibly be. I have never forgotten his reply: "Ah no, I just rely on my > technique!" Another one from GM Cacoy... I asked him about anting-anting, probably 5 years ago, similar response as the above. But then he went on to mention that he was once watching a demo fight at a local fiesta and one of the fighters was pretty badly beat up. He had several cuts, bumps, etc. on his head and face. Cacoy said that the person then proclaimed that he would demo his anting-anting before the audience. He pulled something out of this pocket and rubbed it over his face. Cacoy said that all the cuts and bumps were gone!!! Cacoy said he couldn't explain how that happened, but that whatever it was obviously hadn't helped the guy during his fight. While I understand that this is different from common filipino practices for blessing amulets, weapons, etc., I felt it was important to find a way to make it my own. By doing so, I feel that I have made a blood/cultural oath to the Inayan System of Eskrima and all other martial paths in general. That's my 2 centavos. They are no FMA wonders but can hold their own with most adults, since both have been kickboxing and swinging sticks since they were 3. They do practice with live blade with the adults, but very structured. When we have sparring or two-man drills, the "juniors" pair off with each other. I am also a (paid ) guest instructor for a Shaolin kempo school, which has numerous kids, teen and adult classes. I incorporate and teach FMA on a limited basis to the teen and adult classes, as part of the school's total curriculum including Shaolin kempo, Gracie jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and practical self-defense (hence, the FMA). Needless to say, the FMA is a little bit more "sedate" than my regular classes. Jay de Leon ------------------------------ From: "Jason Inay" Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 21:56:48 Subject: eskrima: Thanks Wow! Thanks for the compliment, but I would hesitate, and be apprehensive to put myself in the same light as some of those you have put on this list Ray. There are many good Eskrimador/Arnisadors out there, some famous and some not so famous. And I agree with putting the ol' Manongs on that list as well as some of the pre-eminent in their fields. My dad would always say "There is someone always better, stronger, and faster". I would not worry, there are plenty of people out there trying to keep the FMA alive. I agree that we need to, as a community, work hard at preserving what was handed down to us. And I think there are a great deal of talented and ethical 'Players' out there to do just that. Manong Abon has a great passion for his system and imparting a great passion for his art, the same can be said of Uncle Dan's stuff and the way he teaches. GM Taboada is a great person, very personable and formidable, his demonstrations and students show a great level of skill and passion for the art. Uncle Al, well lets just say he know what works. I still remember my training under Uncle Jimmy, I remember getting in trouble in class the most, haha! So I am not worried, not when there are such great people out there, I can only hope to do credit to my teachers, and my Dad of course, by teaching the way they taught me the way they wanted it taught. I just teach what my dad taught me, the way he told me to do it. And I learn from the teachers he approved of, some of which are still alive and on your list. I can not disagree with putting my Uncles up there, but I am just a nephew as my sister is the niece. Which is why I have to say thanks but no thanks. I am still a student, like my dad always was. More over I would be hesitant to put myself up there with GM Presas, my Father, Prof. Vee, P.Guro Sulite, GM A. Cabales, GM Villabraille, or GM Pedoy, which your list does too. :) Suro J. Inay Inayan. www.Inayan.com "It is not in the Knowing..., It is in the Doing.." Suro Mike Inay 1944-2000 - -----from Ray's post------ Given... the fairly recent loss of Mike Inay (we miss you, Suro), Tatang Ilustrisimo, Edgar Sulite, Remy Presas and Prof. Vee has been a HUGE shock. Plus within the last decade also include Angel Cabales, Floro Villabrille and Braulio Pedoy. But just a few of those still with us, young in heart if not in body, are: Cacoy Canete, Diony Canete, Dong Cuesta, Richard Bustillo, Dan Inosanto, Al Concepcion, Jimmy Tacosa, Steve Klement, Tony Diego, Yuli Romo, Rey Galang, Christopher Ricketts, Ben Lema, Emanuel Hart, Leo Gaje, Bill McGrath, Elmer Ybanez, Jose Mena, Andy Abrian, Dentoy Revillar, Bobby Taboada, Ernesto Presas, Narrie Babao, our Dog Brother friends, Matt Marinas, Tom Bisio, Vincent Cabales, Romeo Mamar, David James, Mel Lopez, Mark Harrell, Jason Inay, Danny Guba plus dozens of others I'm forgetting to mention, please forgive me. I understand your concern, especially with the increasing popularity of the FMAs, but I think (hope & pray) we're ok for now... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: "Don Edwards" Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 22:39:06 +0000 Subject: eskrima: FMA to Kids From: Ray Terry Date: Sat, 13 Oct 2001 17:30:39 PDT Subject: Re: eskrima: FMA to Kids > I teach FMA - Doce Pares style - to kids..starting at ages 5 and up!!. >Do you encounter many concerns from the parents when teaching sticks to the kids?< When it comes to Eskrima, we have VERY strict rules regarding handling a stick.eg, the child must ALWAYS keep two hands on the stick (as in ready stance) and never let go until an instructor says so. This avoids someone getting hit with a stick. The parents are real impressed with what the children can do.. and the parents of children that come over from other martial arts schools always seem amazed at how much the children are learning compared to where they come from. BUT..teaching young children is not an easy task by any means..but is rewarding once they get it. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Sun, 14 Oct 2001 16:15:00 PDT Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #456 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
