I do have an empty hand course which most join first and qualify most of them to train in FMA about 6 months later. Usually it comes down to who can come to the class time slot than who "qualifies". By far my best balisong practitioner in the school is a 9 year old who always leaves his dull balisong in the school. They all spar as well. Still trying to understand the game of teaching them the harshness of the art, but then again they all train Muay Thai as well. Hello there, I did a little checking on the actual source of that story -- DEBKAfile (www.debka.com) and found it to be a heavily biased source of information. They are very pro-Israel (not necessarily a bad thing) and definitely have a skewed view towards the news from that region as well as the rest of the world, which causes me to question the dependability of their sources. There was Grandmaster Vincent Cabales,Grandmaster Santana and Guro Carlito Bonjoc. But Guro Bonjoc's presentation was a blast! The stick seemed alive in his hands. His timing and technique is so crisp. And he was doing all this while sitting on a stool. Its always a pleasure seeing a master at work. ------------------------------ From: TABULA RAZA Date: Mon, 15 Oct 2001 11:20:53 -1000 (HST) Subject: eskrima: Chinese Connection? Hello everyone, In regards to the recent post and its integrity, let me just say my take on it. It does say that the people were "Chinese Muslims", so I wouldn't necessarily say that China is siding w/ Afghanistan. It was unusual for the post to note that "Beijing" sent the convoy of Chinese Muslims too, unless it is a "covert" kind of operation, whih we all can only speculate. China is a communist country after all, and from what I know, they allways had problems w/ "peripheral politics" concerning peoples of diff. ethnicities and religions that were not Han-oriented. So like all news, we all have to take it w/ some grain of skepticism. However, thank you very much for the article (I forgot who sent it), because it was very interesting to read and think about. I was lucky enough to have attended Gat Puno Abon's summer retreat in Florida this year. I had a great time!! During the retreat I had opportunity to experience and learn some of the Buno. Through the years, I have had a decent amount of experience with other various grappling arts like BJJ, JKD Grappling, Sambo, Dumog, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, etc. While all grappling arts have a lot in common, what I found so refreshing with Gat Puno Abon's Buno was his teaching methodology. Utilizing the animals for visualization of positions was very helpful for me both as a practitioner and as an instructor. I have found over the years that some students are unable to learn unless they themselves can visualize it being done. After the positions were reviewed, various submissions were taught. Though I had seen most of the joint locks and chokes before, Gat Puno Abon entered into them just a tad bit differently. Again, quite refreshing! I for one, would love to see a Buno Competition come to fruition. In addition, if you have yet to take the opportunity of training with Gat Puno Abon Baet, you certainly must. Regardless of your training background, you will certainly walk away with a positive experience as well as one hell of a good time! Regarding Kids learning the FMA.... I presently own and run a "Commercial" if you like that word, academy that teaches Doce Pares Eskrima to students of all ages. We have altered the order of teaching just a bit with the children..Their weaponry (Solo Olisi, Doble Olisi, Bangkaw) starts at Orange Belt (Approximately 1 year into their training). Their first year, they are fully enveloped in mano-mano (kickboxing) and Dumog (Grappling). In one way or another, they are sparring at least once per week....and they love it. The results I have seen are tremendous! The kids who are training with their weapons are currently reviewing angles / defenses / counterstrikes / abecedarios / pingki-pingki / pormas and some light isolation sparring with padded sticks. Eventually they will be sparring full contact (with gear on). You'd be surprised at what sponges kids are with this type of material. In addition, we require them to learn about the history and the culture of Doce Pares as well as the Philippines. There is absolutely no reason why FMA schools (if run properly and effectively) can not produce quality students of all ages! Go for it! Respectively, Jason M.
